I did it!!

Finally Frugal

'Tis done. The student loan has finally been paid off - in full! I sold $20,000 of stock in December (having worked out the capital gains tax hit beforehand) and sent my last payment to the U.S. Department of Education this week! As you will see below, my balance is currently at ZERO! Though 1/3 of the balance was paid with a gift of stock from a family member, fully 2/3 of the balance was paid by ME, from my hard work, sacrifice, and dedication.

Interested in interest.

Finally Frugal

Oh! I forgot to mention one thing yesterday: it has been very, very gratifying to see that a greater percentage of my student loan payments are applied to principle as opposed to interest. For example, you'll see in the table below that in late 2010, when I started making payments, only 67% went to principle payment while a whopping 33% went to interest!

A mid-year update.

Finally Frugal

Whew! I know, I know, it's been awhile! In fact, it's been so long that Blogger has a completely new format and I'm not sure I know my way around anymore. However, I have some news! My student loans are now down to $39,071 !!!! I started the year at around $49,300 so I think I'm doing well for being five months into the year. My goal is to pay my loans down to $20,000 by the end of the year (an ambitious goal, for sure) so in January I can sell my stock and pay it all off once and for all!

An update to celebrate the new year.

Finally Frugal

Greetings! We we begin the new year, I wanted to update my debt repayment status. I've made a dent in my student loan debt, though it has come at the cost of my mortgage debt, unfortunately. Even so, I'm happy with the progress I've made and am excited to watch my student loan debt decrease even more quickly in 2012. I can't imagine the relief that I will feel when this burden is removed from my life forever!

End of Year Wrap Up and 2012 Goals

Finally Frugal

Hello, and Happy Holidays, folks! Whew! It's been quite a year; I have a total of four jobs (one full time, three part time) and am beginning to make a dent in my student loan debt. By the end of this year, I will have increased my income by over 70% (compared to my one full time job). My goal at the beginning of this year was to double my income, and while that didn't happen, I am pleased with what I've managed to achieve.

If you're wondering where I've been in the last six months, I picked up another job, which has just about stretched me to the limit. I'm working a LOT but am also making a nice dent in my student loan debt, though I've still got quite a ways to go. Here's where I was the last time I checked in with you all: Debt Reduction Progress Second Mortgage Debt: $31,400::::$26,257 84% Student Loan Debt: $61,762::::$56,387 91% Primary Mortgage Debt: $167,500::::$158,016 94% And here's where I'm at now (foc
