The Frugal Girl

This post contains affiliate links. February, March, and April hold 5/6 birthdays in our family, starting with Mr. FG and Zoe in February. Let the celebrations begin! What I Spent. I spent $84 at the grocery store, plus $25 on my Hungry Harvest. And oddly enough, I did not go to Aldi this week.

Smokey Mountain Cabin Rentals at Gatlinburg Falls Resorts

Stockpiling Moms

In late November I found myself planning a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. We have never taken a Multi-generational trip with the family and this was the perfect time to start planning. My Mom was. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]].

Well, that was an unusual week!

The Frugal Girl

I didn’t really do any cooking this week because last Saturday, I flew out to Lake Tahoe to go skiing with my parents and my siblings.

The Frugal Girl

Homemade Granola Bars

The Frugal Girl

I wanted to link to this recipe recently, and I clicked on over to it only to discover that it was kind of a train wreck. Totally un-printable, with photos intermingled with directions and ingredients. It was 2009, what can I say? I didn’t know what I was doing!

Are you ready to see this?

The Frugal Girl

My freezer is actually empty! Clean! Defrosted! And I’m just about ready to plug it back in. After working through nearly everything from my last freezer post, I put the few remaining items in my kitchen freezer.

I’m trying 12 cheap/free things that promise to make me happier

The Frugal Girl

Because trying things is fun. And watching other people try things is fun too! I mean, Gretchen Rubin wrote a whole book about trying happiness habits for a year, and the world was pretty interested in that.

Tuesday Tip | Make some t-shirt rags

The Frugal Girl

If you have some old t-shirts lying around that are really, really no good for wearing or donating, cut them up into rags. Just get a sharp pair of scissors, cut out the neck edging and the seams, and cut the remaining fabric into your desired rag size.

Cheap, Awesome Eats in Vegas

Shereen Travels Cheap

There used to be a time when you went to Vegas, gambled all day and could eat at a buffet for $8. Now, everything is $30pp and that counts as budget for Sin City. Well, not for me. I do indulge a bit in an expensive restaurant or buffet, but I try to use a coupon if I can.

Five Frugal Things | ok, actually 10

The Frugal Girl

I used up some crystallized honey. I had two containers of pretty solid honey that I was tired of looking at. So I made a batch of chocolate chip granola bars. And a batch of energy balls. I made soup with my butternut squash. I got one from Hungry Harvest and it sat on my counter for a while.

Tuesday Tip | How to find posts/recipes on my blog!

The Frugal Girl

This is not a money-saving tip, necessarily, but it’s a question that I get somewhat regularly…people write to me wondering how to find a recipe or a DIY that I’ve posted before.

My nest has emptied a little bit

The Frugal Girl

I turned 40 in 2018, and on my birthday I remember thinking that this decade, my forties, would probably be a decade full of much more change than my thirties. (me me and my friend who came to see my for my 40th!). This is largely due to the stage of life we are in as parents.

How much should you spend on groceries? (and other grocery questions)

The Frugal Girl

I’ve gotten lots of questions in the new year about my grocery budget, so I thought I’d answer them here in a post, rather than emailing/responding to everyone’s comments. Less work for me, and then everyone can benefit! How many people are you feeding?

Freezer Challenge | MAYBE the very last one

The Frugal Girl

I’ve been working on eating down the contents of my chest freezer for months now, and I’m finally nearing the end! Here’s how things started, as a reminder. The lid of my chest freezer has accumulated some condensation inside the lid, where it’s frozen.

What I Spent, What We Ate | I’m $19 over for the month

The Frugal Girl

What I Spent. I spent $171 at the grocery store, plus $25 on my Hungry Harvest. So I’m at $196 , which is on the high side again. Partly this is because I keep having to buy all my proteins for the week since I don’t have a stash in my freezer!

Five Frugal Things | My jeans broke. Again.

The Frugal Girl

Happy Monday, friends! I mended my bench cushion. We bought a table and chair set from Crate and Barrel some years ago and while the furniture is fine, the pads are less impressive. The bench cushion especially has been problematic, in that it shrinks when you wash it.

What I Spent, What We Ate | It’s the shortest day of the year!

The Frugal Girl

When I got up this morning and got out the devotional that Mr. FG and I read together, I looked and the date and realized, OOH! Today is the shortest day of the year! That in itself is not cause for rejoicing, exactly, because I hate dark days. But what it means is that longer days are coming.

Tuesday Tip | Eat what’s cheap right now.

The Frugal Girl

Before you decide what to buy and cook each week, consider what’s available inexpensively right now. What’s on sale? What’s in season? What’s already in your freezer/fridge/pantry that needs to be used? Using what you have before it goes bad is a very cheap option!).

Random randomness | a dead dishwasher,

I have a bunch of unrelated things to tell you. So randomness it is! My dishwasher is currently dead. It mysteriously stopped mid-cycle a few nights back, which is a bummer.

Thai Chicken Soup

The Frugal Girl

I shared about this soup on Instagram and in my menu post this week, and I got a fair number of message asking for the recipe. This is definitely going into our regular rotation because: we all thought it was delicious (most importantly!).

The Frugal Girl

Packing for a Weekend Getaway

Shereen Travels Cheap

Most travelers aren’t content never taking a vacation or even slaving away all year to wait for their annual trip. In fact, aside from the usual two weeks, it’s hard to make it through day-to-day without getting away a few other times throughout the year.

What I Spent, What We Ate | restocking is no joke

The Frugal Girl

What I Spent. First up, last Saturday, I got my $25 Hungry Harvest box. For those of you asking about the value of the Hungry Harvest produce, I weighed mine this week, and my box held 20 pounds of produce. So, that’s $1.25/pound , averaged out.

The Cookie Contest Answers!

The Frugal Girl

Readers. For the first time ever, no one got all the cookie answers right! In previous years, someone eventually got them all correct, but this time 0/116 got them all in order. A lot of you were really close, but boy, that last cookie stumped a bunch of you. Almost no one guessed it was Lisey!

Parmesan Polenta with Red Sauce

The Frugal Girl

Sonia saw this Parmesan polenta recipe in a Cook’s Country magazine and requested that we try it. So she deserves credit for putting this into our rotation! In case you’re not familiar with it, polenta is a cornmeal pudding, which is often chilled and then sliced and baked or fried. (
