How We Paid Cash for a 2008 Toyota Sienna Mini-Van
We had not been including our non-routine expenses in our monthly budget, because frankly, those were the things that made it look like we didn’t have enough, just like I discuss here . When When we quit denying that life would happen to us and around us, and instead began to prepare by setting aside monthly for things like car repair and Christmas gifts, we started to get ahead. We We paid cash for a new-to-us 2008 Toyota Sienna last month. The thrill of seeing that the check cleared the bank was second only to writing the check that paid off our last non-mortgage debt.

Lessons From the Mama: Money Management Isn't JUST For Adults
When a child asked mom or dad about saving and budgeting, they were more often than not told “Don’t worry about that” or “It is none of your business.” We don’t “owe” her a car to get around. My mother taught me so much when I was growing up. She shared her morals and values with me and because of her I’ve grown into the woman, wife & mother I am today.

Most budgets look backwards. better budget looks forward .
But first, let me tell you why traditional budgeting drives me batty by looking backward!
Expenses vary widely each month (excluding fixed bills like housing, cell phone, or car payment). Most non-fixed expenses are hard You pull out your bills and receipts from the past month and add up what you spent. That number indicates how much you will spend this month, right?

I read an interesting article in USAA Mag recently, "Budgets Are The New Black," and I thought it did a great job of breaking down budgets by percentages (plus, what a killer headline!). Again, not just your car loan , but the money to pay for gas , parking and upkeep, as well as any taxis or public transportation. Monday Q&A-Specificity and budgeting
For the most part, we have budgeted amounts for our expenses. To take your example, we have a $400/month budget for food, a $50/month budget for clothes (which usually ends up being more than we need), and a $40/month gift budget (this most gets saved for Christmas expenses).
