Absolutely However, to really understand your finances, you must understand what your basic life necessities really cost you. You have to be honest with yourself about where your money is coming from and where your money is going . This first step is one of the hardest things to do!

Why traditional budgeting is WRONG
Most budgets look backwards. better budget looks forward .
But first, let me tell you why traditional budgeting drives me batty by looking backward!
Most non-fixed expenses are hard to predict, and thus are hard to budget for.
We all know budgeting is smart. You pull out your bills and receipts from the past month and add up what you spent. That number indicates how much you will spend this month, right?

I read an interesting article in USAA Mag recently, "Budgets Are The New Black," and I thought it did a great job of breaking down budgets by percentages (plus, what a killer headline!). I can't be hardcore with *every* dollar I bring in, I'd go crazy! I think it's great to compare your finances to a chart like Jean's every now and then. Here are some of the book’s more interesting tips, which has 12 chapters broken into tidbits under the banner of frugal living and personal finance. got this far before I flipped to the back to check out their reference section, which is when I realized I am mentioned in a list of the “Best Personal Finance Blogs.” DISCLOSURE: I have a working relationship with the folks at Wise Bread.
In fact, this is exactly the type of book I wish had my name on the cover.
