Frugal Parenting: How to Make Your Own 'Angry Birds' Yard Game

My kids love

I'm sure your kids do as well.  You may even be an addict.

However it's time to put the digital devices down and head outside.

Yesterday I was cleaning out our basement and had several empty cardboard boxes.

I took them outside and told the kids to grab all of their buckets -- you know the buckets you can get at the Dollar Tree?

We removed the handles.

Then I instructed the kids to gather up all of their bouncy balls.  Different sizes equal different birds.

We used a heavy red and black soccer ball as the "BIG BIRD"  -- the kids started calling it 'Big Nasty' for some reason.  Don't ask me where they got that.

But 'Big Nasty' gets the job done.

We stacked the boxes in different formations and placed the buckets at different levels to represent the pigs.

It was so much fun.

You could really spruce this up a bit for an Angry Birds birthday party or if you plan on hosting a family reunion this summer, start saving some boxes so you can entertain the kids.

What you'll need and how to find them:

Various size boxes -- Next time you stop in Aldi or Sam's pick up some extra boxes.  Ask around at work or next time you're at the store.  {People will think you are moving}

Something to resemble the pigs -- it can be bowls, buckets or stuffed animals.

Balls - various sizes

Draw a line where the player has to stand to represent the sling shot.

Notepad to keep score - if you're all about keeping score.

What did they learn?

Stacking and balancing larger objects.

How cause and effect work -- ie If I hit this box it will also knock over the other box.

How to properly aim at targets.

How hard to throw the ball in different situations.

It was so much fun and it was completely cheap and on the fly -- pun intended.
