Outside Magazine examines Unschooling, an alternative education movement

My kids love to pretend play and use their imaginations, which I love to nurture.

Do you know what Unschooling is? Have you heard about it or know someone who has chosen this path for their children? Unschooling is alternative education format for children where they stay at home and learn about their world through play and self led exploration without a set curriculum. (Go here for the Wiki definition.)

Part of me wants to do this with my children and part of me has numerous reservations, but all of me wants to learn more.

If you are in a similar situation as I am then check out this feature by Outside Magazine where a family shares about their life as unschoolers in "We don't need no education."

The story follows the life of a couple and their two sons in Vermont and how they struggled in the beginning but found a niche in which they say the children are learning and developing on their farm.

Unschooling is legal in Alabama.  Families who choose this form of education register with a cover school that allows unschooling.  Not all cover schools allow unschooling under their charter.
