Granny Dollar was one of the most colorful characters and rugged individualists who ever lived in the area. She has long captured the imagination of those who have heard of this Cherokee Indian’s century of varied experiences Free.

Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-28, Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama Festival and Pow Wow, 16th Annual, Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center--There will be American Indian artisans, craftsmen, storytellers, living history demonstrations, dancers and traditional foods and crafts. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Fee

Saturday, Sept. 28, All Day-- 175th Anniversary of the Trail of Tears, Lake Guntersville State Park

A walk along the original trail that led the Cherokees out of Alabama. Hikes to a trail marker tree, used to guide hunters and travelers and a Cherokee plants hike, and more. Free.

Saturday, Sept. 28, 8 am -- Geocaching 101, Desoto State Park

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Free.

Hunt for hidden treasure at the Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve in Auburn. Fee.

Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 am -- Hikes for Tykes, Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Join the Botanical Gardens education staff for a tour of the Gardens. Geared towards pre-school children and their families. We will build fairy houses! Free.

Join Vulcan volunteer and mining history buff Gary Bostany and hike Ruffner Mountain's trails. View some of the mining relics, iron-ore crushers, and mine openings that visitors rarely get to see. Free

Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 am -- Aflutter with Monarchs: Garden Expedition, Birmingham Botanical Gardens

For children K - 3rd grade. Discover their life cycle, how they help plants for pollination, how they need plants for food and homes. Children under the age of 6 are welcome to stop by for a free reading of a nature based story followed by arts and crafts. Free.

Parents and kids join us for a hike and some discovery time. Great way for children to enjoy the outdoors while learning more about the natural world.
