The newest addition to the Southern Museum of Flight collection, a rare Soviet-era
Mi-24 Hind Helicopter will arrive during the week of April 9.

The story of this helicopter's journey begins in the former Soviet Union, then passes through Afghanistan and, after capture and use by American Special Forces and other government agencies in the United States, continues here at the Southern Museum of Flight. With assistance from Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, Army Veterans Groups and others, the Southern Museum of Flight has acquired such an important piece of history. The aircraft's historical significance to American foreign policy decisions during the Soviet presence in Afghanistan, as well as to our current involvement in the Global War on Terrorism, is a story that the Southern Museum of Flight looks forward to sharing. During the Soviet Union's presence in Afghanistan in the 1980s, American CIA operatives armed Mujahideen insurgents battling the Soviets with Stinger missiles – surface-to-air missiles designed to shoot down the Hind. Initially, the Stingers had limited success against the Hind. After the capture and evaluation of this aircraft, improvements in tracking were made and the Stinger became a lethal weapon against the Hind. Now, that aircraft and its story can be experienced at the Southern Museum of Flight!
