This one hour program is suited for people of all ages and allows you to get close and personal with some of the educational animals at the Nature Center. $1 per vehicle to enter campground.

Commemoration of 175th Anniversary of the Trail of Tears

September 28th marks the 175th anniversary of the Trail of Tears.

To commemorate that period in American history, Russell Cave has

partnered with Lake Guntersville State Park and the Alabama Chapter of

the Trail of Tears Association to host a special event at Lake Guntersville State Park where there will be speakers who have traveled the trails and

tables set up where you can pick up lesson plans, Trail of Tears programs in the state, and information about how you can learn more about the Trail of Tears.

Legends of the Lookout Campfire Talk Series

Join us for a fun campfire talk in the great outdoors! The Legends of the Lookout is a series of 1-hour campfire talks in DeSoto State Park, featuring the histories of the people & the places around Lookout Mountain, Alabama. Series showcases everything from the story of Spanish Conquistador Hernando DeSoto to the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps that built DeSoto State Park.

Granny Dollar was one of the most colorful characters and rugged individualists who ever lived in the Fort Payne area. She has long captured the imagination of those who have heard of this Cherokee Indian’s century of varied experiences. Learn the history of her life.

Seating is limited, so bring your own comfortable camp chair if you wish.

Sequoyah, the Creator of the Cherokee Nation’s Written Language

Sequoyah is celebrated as a Native American genius who, solely from the resources of his mind, endowed a whole tribe with learning; the only man in history to conceive and perfect in its entirety a syllabary. Sequoyah was known to have taught in the DeKalb County area for years after his mother took up residence in Willstown, Alabama during the movement of the Cherokee Nation to Oklahoma. Learn his history.

Geocaching 101-Presented by Coosa Valley Cachers

Do you want to learn more about Geocaching?

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Included in the class will be a lesson on what geocaching is and how you do it. There will be a live demonstration of geocaching and geocaching supplies will be on display.
