Frugal Parenting: Make straw necklaces (Develop patience & pattern creating skills)

This past Saturday I was at Babypalooza. I had a booth and instead of sitting there passing out flyers and candy I wanted to have something for the little ones (future big brothers and sisters) to create.

It was spur of the moment so I quickly grabbed an extra pack of straws I had in my stockpile and ribbon.

I cut the straws up into different lengths using scissors.

Mixed them up in a container.

Once I arrived at the show I offered the kids the choice of making a bracelet or necklace.

Most chose the necklace.

Simply cut a piece of string or ribbon, tie a knot in the end and let the kids go at it.

What I learned from watching the multitude of kids that made the necklaces was a simple lesson with 2 parts

This is a quiet time craft for sure.

1. It teaches them patience and helps develops their abilities to concentrate.

2. It encourages pattern making abilities.  Alternating colors, shapes etc.

If you need a quick and easy craft give this a try.  Straws are cheap.
