COVID-19 Mother's Day

5 Simple Ideas for a Special Mother’s Day at Home

While the mother in your life may deserve to be jetted off to Paris or whisked away to a fancy restaurant to celebrate Mother’s Day, that’s just not in the cards this year due to COVID-19 stay at home orders. You might not be able to give her the indulgent experience of her dreams, but that doesn’t mean you can’t treat her to a special day at home. Here are a few ways to make Mother’s Day special!

Have the Kids Help Make Breakfast

Breakfast in bed is a classic Mother’s Day treat! When the kids help make it, breakfast in bed can be even more special. The menu doesn’t need to be complicated or use ingredients you don’t already have at home. Just make the most of what you have!

Here are a few recipes that kids might be able to help with:

  • Avocado Toast via Cookie and Kate – Avocado toast is so simple but so satisfying. We love that this recipe has plenty of ideas for variations you might try. Kids could help mash the avocados and decide how to top the toast.
  • Maple, Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Overnight Oats via Evolving Table – Overnight oats are easy to make, and you can do it the night before so that Mother’s Day isn’t so rushed. Plus, this recipe has some substitutions listed, so if you don’t have everything on hand, you might still be able to make it.
  • Pancake Muffins via Twin Mom Refreshed – Not only is this recipe is easy to make, but kids can help select toppings and add them to the pan! You could even base the toppings on what you have available so that you don’t need to run to the store.

Make Special Gifts

Homemade gifts can be more meaningful than store-bought gifts, so Mother’s Day is a great time to get crafty.

Here are some clever projects we love:

  • Kid-Made Free Printable Mother’s Day Book via Hello, Wonderful – We like that this printable download makes it easy to share fun thoughts on Mom. If you don’t have a printer or printer paper handy, you could also use the prompts to inspire your child’s art.
  • DIY Mother’s Day Flower Pots via Awe Filled Homemaker – This fun project might be even better than real flowers! While it calls for some crafting supplies, you could also make pretty flowers with things you may be more likely to have on hand, like construction paper and pipe cleaners.

Setup a Video Call with Her Mother

Since the mother in your life might be missing her own mother right about now, arranging a video call could give them a chance to reconnect. They could chat, watch a movie or TV show together, or even eat a meal together during the video call. Not to mention grandma would love to see her grandkids, too!

Watch a Show or Movie She’s Been Interested In

Has she been wanting to watch a movie or TV show that the rest of the family just isn’t interested in? Now might be the day to treat her to the binge-watching session of her choice. While the program may not be your favorite, everyone can enjoy seeing Mom happy on her special day.

Have a Picnic or Barbecue

If you have a yard and good weather, why waste them? Having a picnic or barbecue can make the day more festive. Simple salads and sandwiches are easy to enjoy outside. Just remember to do both the setup and cleanup so that Mom can relax and enjoy her day!
