Frugal Parenting: Using Infant Boy Shorts For Potty Training

baby shorts.jpg

This is going to sound like an odd topic but it's a frugal tip that has saved me lots of money on buying under garments for my sons who are potty trained.

I reuse the small infant shorts that were part of cute sets when they were babies as a sort of boxer brief for them.

You're wondering why in the world is she telling me this?

Because you can save money on buying the character underwear if you let them use the smaller shorts, which no longer fit length-wise but may still fit around the waist.

WILL THEY FIT?

This recycling of your infant clothing technique will work well with the 9 to 12 month size on a 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 year old child.

Some will fit, some will not.  You want the fit to be snug but not tight.

SAVING MONEY?

One thing you don't get at baby showers -- toddler underwear.  No one will think of it.

Two years down the road when you're making the transition from pull ups to big boy undies you'll have to buy several packs.  OR You'll feel the need to.

But if you go through those old outfits from their younger months you might find a few pairs that will work.

OTHER BENEFITS --

Shorts help the child be more independent in the restroom or with getting dressed.  Sometimes the elastic bands around the legs can be too tight.

Waist measurements when they shed the toddler belly may be similar to the waist measurement of say a 2T shorts when they actually wear lengthwise a 4T.

I like using the shorts for potty training and now for independence training because they are easier for the child to adjust than say a brief.

PRICES --

Prizing character undies for children can be expensi

ve and coupons rarely exist to save.  Prices for 5 to 7 packs range from $6 to $9.

So to supplement a couple of packages of their favorites I use the smaller shorts.
