Don't Wrap Any Gifts If you are visiting friends and family and haven't shipped your presents ahead (which I highly recommend), don't wrap them and stash them in your carry-on. The trick to packing small in the winter is layering and not caring if all your pictures are you wearing the same coat and scarf (maybe two).

You never know when a cold snap will present itself, even when it comes in the form of really insistent air conditioning. It doesn't take up as much room as an umbrella, but you can pack it down into your day bag and also use it if you happen to get chilly. This is also why I always bring a scarf or wrap with me on the plane.
