Frugal Tip

How Water Filters Can Save Money and the Planet

It’s no secret that staying hydrated is essential. Our bodies are composed of up to 60% water, and those fluids play an important role in our health. The body needs liquid to lubricate joints, deliver oxygen, cushion the brain, and so much more.

But bottled drinking water can prove surprisingly pricey. Business Insider reports that consumers spend around 300 times as much to drink bottled water than they would to drink tap water. Not only that, plastic bottles frequently end up in landfills, harming the environment.

However, water filters can be a solution to both problems, helping you save both money and the planet. Here’s what you need to know about water filters.

Types of Filters

There are three main types of filters: carafes/pitchers, countertop models, and under-sink models.

If your household only has one or two people, or you do not frequently drink water at home, a carafe or pitcher should suffice. However, if you have a larger family or drink a lot of water, you may need a countertop or under-sink model to handle the volume you’ll use.

Meeting Your At-Home Drinking Needs

Water filters can be a very convenient source of drinking water at home. Rather than needing to spend money on bottled water and then lug it to your house, you’ll have a source of drinking water ready whenever you’re thirsty.

Taking Your Water on the Go

Buying a bottle of water when you’re out and about is even pricier than purchasing water bottles in bulk at the grocery store. If you purchase a single bottle at a restaurant or convenient store, it can cost several dollars. However, if you plan ahead, you can save that money by toting around your own filtered water in a reusable bottle, like a lightweight Nalgene or temperature-controlled Hydro Flask.

While you’ll still need to fork over some money to replace your filters regularly, that’s a fraction of the cost compared to buying bottled water.

Both your wallet and the environment could benefit from getting a water filter!
