iPhone 5 could be out Oct. 4.

I've been waiting on this myself.

Here's an excerpt:

Alabama native and Apple CEO Tim Cook is expected to introduce Apple's fifth-generation iPhone at an Oct. 4 event, according to John PaczKowski of All Things D.

Citing sources close to situation, Paczkowski reported that Apple's annual iPhone introduction is scheduled to be held in less than 2 weeks and that "Cook is certain to preside over the iPhone 5 rollout."

Despite the fact that Cook has not been a major part of Apple product introductions before, he is familiar with the media whirlwind that goes along with anything Apple. And as Apple's chief operating officer, he has spoken extensively during quarterly earnings conference calls

In the past Steve Jobs has served as emcee for product unveilings, but the Apple co-founder left his position in August citing medical reasons and named Cook as his successor. During Jobs' previous medical leave of absence in 2009, Philip Schiller handled the debut of the Apple iPhone 3GS.

But Paczkowski says that a Schiller introduction "would undercut Cook's new role" at the same time as reinforcing the perception that Apple will operate differently under Cook's leadership.
