Our Debt Freedom Plan has been a long winding road. The journey started in 2012 when we bought an office building for our business and then found ourselves with a lot of debt and not enough cash flow. To ease my anxiety about our new loans, we took the Financial Peace University home course and it changed how we thought about debt.

How Our Debt Freedom Plan Prepared Us for the Pandemic. Our emergency fund. I am totally paraphrasing the year, but had it not been for the money in our emergency savings, we would most likely have used credit cards to survive. This new business debt weighed on me. Our first storm: 2007. Storm #2: 2013.

Did you make a goal to pay off debt this year? For many years, we made a yearly goal to chip away at our six figures of non-mortgage debt. It took us years to pay it all off, but we achieved it in 2019. Our journey to debt freedom started back in 2013 when we found ourselves saddled with business and student loans.

I have written often about the importance of an emergency fund. We paid off our last non-mortgage debt in September and have since sent that loan’s monthly payment to our mortgage principal. We just finished paying off our non-mortgage debts and now we were considering taking out a car loan. Cash is King.

In September 2019, my husband and I accomplished our biggest financial goal in our almost 20 years of marriage. It was so big that I cried for two days straight– we paid off six figures in non-mortgage debts. After the first year, the new business debt weighed on me. Our non-mortgage loans totaled over six figures.

This is our very last non-mortgage loan and we send an extra payment every month as part of our Debt Freedom Plan. If nothing changes, this loan will be paid off by end of 2019, but I’d love to move that up and say adios to this loan! If not, we’ll start saving in 2019. I’ll apply that money to the debt.
