As baby grows, we might turn back into fiendish savers – trying to get that retirement fund or college fund built up. But, in college, I spent my summer earnings – on clothes, on a used car and on school activities. I also saved – maxing out 401K contributions to build up the retirement funds.

I loved being home with my birth family as a kid, going to elementary and high school, finding new found freedom at college in my teens and early twenties, striking out on my own in my twenties, having and raising my babies in my twenties and thirties. Your body has not yet cascaded into steep decline and your mind is still zipping along.

I had been at my previous job for 17 years (straight out of college) and it had turned into a very toxic situation. I just wanted to get away and I moved my 401K money to the advisor they referred me to. I’d send some to my nieces to help with their college expenses and would donate half to our local food pantry.
