Everything you wanted to know about Fincon!

The Frugal Girl

Last week, I went to Fincon19, my very first blogging conference. Well, actually, I think it was the first conference of any type I’ve gone to in my 41 years on this planet. You guys said you wanted to hear more about it, so I’m here to answer some questions!

What I Spent, What We Ate | Costco is always the culprit.

The Frugal Girl

What I Spent. We spent $150.52 at the grocery store this week, which means I would have been right on budget. Except there was a Costco trip that totaled $31 (two chickens plus floss and toothpaste.). On a related note, here are the top ten things I buy at Costco.

What I Spent, What We Ate | Next one will be September!

The Frugal Girl

I am definitely ready for some slightly cooler weather, but I’m also a little sad that our summer break is coming to an end. But, it’s going to end no matter how I feel about it, so I’m going to focus on the fact that I am getting pretty tired of hot and humid weather.

Five Frugal Things | I’m amazed about the second one!

The Frugal Girl

Time for some mid-week frugality. Ready? I’ve sold $130 worth of books on eBay. While decluttering the office, Mr. FG and I found a bunch of books that we no longer needed. So, I went on an eBay listing spree, and as a result, I’ve sold $130 worth of books.

I got my soffit painted!

The Frugal Girl

I’ve been putting this project off because it’s been so hot here for so long. But we finally got a break in the weather and I had a day with not too many obligations. Time to sand and paint! We have plywood soffits on our house, and I sanded and painted the back one a few years ago.

Our second Ohio trip, in photos

The Frugal Girl

We finally crossed this off of our summer bucket list , just in the nick of time. One of my best friends, Mia, used to live here, but in 2018, she and her kids moved to Ohio. Sonia and Zoe and I visited them last August , and we went for another visit this August.

Five Frugal Things | Vintage fashion modification, for one

The Frugal Girl

I modified a vintage top for Sonia. She had a green silk long-sleeved top (kindly given to her) that had a lot of irreparable damage in the armhole area, along with several previous repairs. I suggested that we just give up on the sleeves and make it a sleeveless shirt instead.

86 degrees in my house? Ohhhhh, no.

The Frugal Girl

Recently, I read about a blogger who sets his thermostat at 86 degrees during the summer and I’m not gonna lie: I was kind of horrified at the thought. I am an unabashed air-conditioning lover and I am frequently grateful that I was born after this blessed invention.

Eat more of the good foods.

The Frugal Girl

Back in April, CNN published an article about a global diet study that had sort of surprising results: Many diet-related deaths are due not to over-consumption of bad foods, but to under-consumption of good foods, such as whole grains, fruit, nuts, and seeds.

What I Spent, What We Ate | 4th of July week

The Frugal Girl

Well, hi! I’ve been absent for two days, due partially to the holiday and also to the fact that I have been busy painting. I have things to show you next week! What I Spent. I spent $120 at the grocery stores this week, and I accidentally did not get a Hungry Harvest.

Two twin beds: painted!

The Frugal Girl

Way back in 2003, when I was pregnant with Sonia, we bought a bunkbed for Joshua and Lisey to share. Later, Lisey and Sonia shared it, and then until last year, Sonia and Zoe shared it. So, every kid in our family has slept in this bed!

Use less self-control: Avoid spending triggers

WIS, WWA | I did not blow my budget at Costco. (!)

The Frugal Girl

What I Spent. I made it out to Costco, where I spent $45. Then I spent $73 at Aldi plus one other regular grocery store, and $16 at the produce stand. So, amazingly enough, I went to Costco and did not have an over-budget week. WHAT EVEN IS THIS???? I’m at $134 for the week. August Spending.

The Frugal Girl

I am a long-time (happy!) subscriber to Cook’s Country, and occasionally to Cook’s Illustrated. I consider my subscriptions to be an investment in my efforts to cook at home, and cooking at home saves so much money, a magazine subscription is a tiny thing to pay for.

What I Spent, What We Ate | I’ve missed a few nights this week.

The Frugal Girl

What I Spent. I got a $25 Hungry Harvest box and I spent $98 at the grocery store. What We Ate. Saturday. Mr. FG and I went out for a date night to Panera, which was fine, but dang it, I had a $25 gift card at home and I forgot to bring it. Whoops. Time for more sandwich-y date nights! Sunday.

The Frugal Girl

This quote, on a sign at Jimmy John’s, caught my eye recently. (I I tried googling to see who came up with it, but I can’t find the answer. If you know, drop me a comment!). Of course, I immediately thought of how this relates to contentment. More does not fix the problem.
