Book Nook - Year of Our Lord Author Q&A

Bible scholar David S. Heeren assumes the mantle from Charles M. Sheldon (who first posited the question, “what would Jesus do?”) and adapts and advances the premise for modern generations in his new book, Year of Our Lord.

In it, David introduces readers to relatable, well-rounded characters who represent a cross-section of Christians entering troubled times — each of them pledging to do as Jesus would do for one year, and the results will surprise you!

You can learn more in this author's Q&A.

Jesus prophesied the hatred and persecution of believers before his Second Coming (Mat. 24:9-12, 21). What did He say we should do if and when this happens? (Stand firm in the faith: Mat. 24:13).

What did He say about the suffering that accompanies persecution? Is it something of value in His kingdom or should it be avoided at all costs? (e.g. the beating of innocent Ellen Backster in the book: suffering believers will be eternally rewarded, just as she is rewarded with freedom and a third daughter. Mat. 5:11-12).

What do  you like about your favorite character in the book? She sustains her faith through a period of unjust treatment and endures suffering because of the mistakes of others. This happened to me, and I can honestly say, I needed it. God knew I needed it and allowed it to happen. Even in the worst times we can be confident that He knows what He is doing and will bring about just resolutions.

Lifestyle is important to believers. What attitude did Jesus say he detests? (lukewarm behavior, e.g., uncaring attitude when others are suffering or our own faith is flagging. Rev. 3:16-17).

What human characteristics receive the most praise from Him? He said in his word, the Bible, that the fruit of the Spirit is love: Galatians 5:22. But he added other fruitful things. The things added, such as joy, peace and faithfulness (faith) are important, and in some ways are sequential to love, but love is No. 1. We are to seek ways of expressing love to everyone around us, even enemies.

About the Author

David S. Heeren is an award-winning journalist and author of 19 books. A personal prayer identical to that of Isaiah (Is. 6:8) led him to change his career emphasis from sports writing to Christian writing in 2007. Since that time, he has published 10 books with Christian themes, five of which deal with biblical end-time prophecy. His book, The High Sign, which identifies the most likely sign of Jesus’ Second Coming, received a double-four-star (perfect) rating from the Online Book Club — the highest rating awarded by the club. Year of Our Lord is a prelude to Heeren’s latest book, The Coming.
