Last year I wrote this post o

Those still apply but in light of changes, scrutiny and increased attention of the coupon world, I thought I would add to it.

I.

THOU SHALT NOT DECODE UPC BARCODES & BARCODE FAMILIES -

If you accidentally use the wrong coupon on the wrong product yet it scans -- fine, but if you intentionally shop that way you are robbing the store of reimbursement.

II.

THOU SHALT NOT TAKE ENTIRE TEARPADS, BLINKIE COUPONS OR COUPON FLIERS AND SELL THEM IN MASS QUANTITIES ON EBAY ---

Yes it's illegal to sell coupons, so folks get around that by selling their service of clipping and shipping.  We rely on legitimate services.  However, selling huge lots of Publix store coupons, entire tear pads you've ripped off units and the like, is wrong.

III.

THOU SHALT NOT GANG CUT --

(Unlike the real 10 commandments, this one is a bit of a grey area.)

.

IV.  THOU SHALT NOT ALTER COUPONS

-- Let

In the digital age, where PDF files are easily manipulated, sites help you create barcodes and on and on, don't be tempted to get caught up in it.  Someone is always watching.

V.  THOU SHALT NOT USE EXPIRED COUPONS --

There's not a store on this planet, ok in this area that takes expired coupons.  The lump in your throat that appears when you know the date but hope the cashier won't notice is there for a reason -- it's your conscience.  Sometimes the register will accept the coupon, however, the store will be refused reimbursement by the manufacturer after auditing the proper use of the coupon.

VI.  THOU SHALT NOT COPY COUPONS --

It's super easy to do but super illegal.  Go here to see why you shouldn't copy coupons, and h

VII.  THOU SHALT NOT ABUSE SELF CHECK OUT REGISTERS --

There are a number of stores who have added self check out lanes.  Including the ability to use coupons.  Don't try to swipe a coupon that you know doesn't match the products you purchased.  The register will beep and you'll more than likely have to explain yourself.  Sometimes the registers beep even on legitimate coupons, but you always want to be above board so the associate or managers inspection will end in your favor, not embarrassment.

VIII.  THOU SHALT KNOW THY STORE'S COUPON POLICY --

This is essential to a smooth checkout and no surprises at the register.  You can plan better and be more confident about your estimated out of pocket expenses.  (Don't leave home without it)

IX.

THOU SHALT READ THE TERMS OF THE COUPON AND UNDERSTAND LIMITS --

Go her

X.  THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOR

-- Deal limits will help us stick to this one.
