Just look at the many people scouring garage sales in the summer. If you think buying used is just for people who are on a tight budget, think again. The most famous large family, the Duggars, routinely buy as much as they can used. Blender Fifteen years ago, I bought a blender at a garage sale for $3. Do you buy used?

A lot of the things that you’ll be buying will only be in use for a matter of months so it makes little sense to buy everything brand new if you’re on a budget. Don’t look to buy used car seats though as you can’t be sure of their safety and whether they have previously been involved in an accident. Look for bargains.

In 2015 I’m challenging myself to rethink purchases by taking advantage of more cost effective solutions like borrowing, buying second hand, or just making do with what we already have. I made one trip to my favorite thrift store during their dollar days sale. February Update.

I happened upon some old canning Mason jars at a garage sale, and now we use those for everything–making iced tea in the summer, putting leftover soup in, holding our homemade laundry detergent. We bought some plastic leftover containers, but those frequently cracked or broke. Throwing those away isn’t good for the environment.

Buy second hand. Check out consignment mommies for seasonal consignment sales near you. My library allows me not only to check out books, but magazines, movies, even video games. Meat, veggies, clothes, ect. Check out this post for a cheap idea on how to get started.
