From Natalie:
Many of the larger retailers are now opening on Thanksgiving Day for the official start of Holiday Shopping Season. Many of you are saying a big huge”NO” to shopping on Thanksgiving and others are saying “Sure, why not?”
No matter what your plans are, shopping or staying in with family, we hope that you enjoy the time you spend with your loved ones. Some people make their memories planning time their shopping trips with family. Some of my best memories of Thanksgiving are sitting with my Mom and my two sisters AFTER dinner. We carefully looked through each ad and planned our shopping trips. At two am, we stood outside, freezing and tired from a long day of cooking. None of that mattered, as I was with my sisters and my Mom, having our kind of fun. After shopping, we would go someplace breakfast and more coffee. That was making memories for me. Happy Memories.
While it seems that more and more stores are opening on Thanksgiving, a handful are saying they will not open until Friday. Nordstrom and Costco are the most recent stores to do so.
“Our employees work especially hard during the holiday season and we simply believe that they deserve the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with their families,” a Costco spokesman told the website Think Progress. Source WFMZ
Some stores are sticking to the Friday, that makes up Black Friday. Here are the lists of stores that are currently closed on Thanksgiving 2014.
- Dillards
- Costco
- American Girl
- Burlington Coat Factory
- REI
- Marshalls
- HomeGoodS
- TJ Maxx
- Nordstorm
As for me, I will be here the entire week of Thanksgiving, through the Dec 24th, helping you find the best deals. You can join me on our Facebook page or stop by our 101 Deals of Christmas page.

Pure greed, nothing else. Why can’t stores open 24hrs starting 8am on Black Friday? If they really want more, open all weekend (24 hrs per day) Friday – Sunday. Where will the trend stop? 5 years from now, Black Friday Sales will start on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I say Boycott “Black Friday” all together.

I think we shouldn’t encourage this trend by participating in the Thursday feeding frenzy. Granted, some people really appreciate door buster deals. If there was a way to discourage door busters, I’d advocate it. Sales are good, but sales on a very limited availability are insane.

Just say NO to shopping on Thanksgiving!!

I’m not really for shopping on Thanksgiving. You really have to take yourself out of your own shoes and think of the poor people that have to work on those days!
I spent the majority of my high school and early college years working small time food services and retail jobs. I can not tell you how many Black Fridays and Thanksgivings I was bullied into working because I was young and didn’t realize that those jobs are disposable.
The only people that should be working on Thanksgiving or Christmas or any major holiday should be cops, fireman, emergency specialists, and emts. Trust me. I don’t exactly think working at Starbucks or a clothing store should take precedent over someone’s right to spend time and make special memories with their families.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I could not agree more!

You’d be surprised. We put up a list for people to volunteer to work on Thursday night and it filled quickly. People are excited for that time and a half pay. There is always two sides to consider.

I personally never have and never will shop on Thanksgiving. I grew up and still believe that that day is dedicated to family, food, football and Alice’s Restaruant of course.

Football for sure!
