10 Basic Cooking Hacks For College Students
So, my niece is off to university this year and has been requesting me for all the family recipes and my best cooking hacks.
Well, my niece enters the kitchen only to make a cup of tea, so I realized I would have to start with some of the most basic cooking hacks.
I have rounded up some of the basic cooking hacks for college students, some of these we don’t think of as a hack anymore even as they have become a part of our cooking process.
Always cook onions before garlic – Add the onions first, when they become transclucent then adding garlic in the cooking process allows for a more robust garlic flavor.
Use a spoon to peel a ginger – Just hold the spoon firmly in your hand and scrape the edge along the surface of the ginger.
To make extra-fluffy pancakes, leave a few lumps in the batter.
Rinse your rice well before cooking – The process of rehydration starts with rinsing which allows the grains to start absorbing water.
Use more than one type of vinegar when dressing a salad. Ideal in salads with fruit or in citrusy dressings.
Watch for the bubbles to know when to flip pancakes.
Roll Out Lemons and Limes – Place them on the counter, and using the bottom of your palm, firmly roll them out on a clean surface. This will actually loosen up the inside of the lemon and lime.
Turn your pan handles to the side – So when you are racing around in the kitchen, you don’t run into the pan handles.
If you need to grate soft cheeses, freeze the cheese for 30 minutes for a cleaner slice.
After you have decided what to cook, put some thought into how to cut your vegetables – Smaller cuts will cook quicker than big ones, and use a mix of both if you want to vary the texture of the dish. And veggies cut on a diagonal will be al dente on the thicker end and soft on the thinner end.
Cooking does take up a lot of time, these cooking tips will definitely help save some time.
