Frugal Cooking: How To Make Apple Pie Sundaes in an Apple Cup

how to make apple pie sundae.jpgI used the whole apple in full frugal fashion. Check it out here...

Did you get  the Martha Stewart Living October issue?  There's a cute little apple sundae dessert featured at the back of the magazine.

It shows an apple with ice cream inside and caramel and nuts drizzled on top.

Her instructions called for discarding the apple.

Uh not for me.   We're going to use it all.

Here's how I made them frugal style for my kids this weekend:

I took a regular apple.  Sliced off the top and saved the good part of the apple.

I also cored it and then scraped the inside of the apple and saved the good portions of the apple.

That created a thin bowl or cup if you will.

The saved portion of apple I mixed in with 2 tablespoons of ice cream (for each apple).  I also mixed in some graham crackers for a pie crust taste.

Then I scooped the ice cream inside the cup.  I then rolled the top in the crumbs form the graham crackers and sprinkled some nuts on top.

I added a garnish of a graham cracker.

You can eat it with a spoon or hold it over a plate and eat it like an ice cream cone.

(I actually have coasters made from sliced cedar trees, you know to mimic her food stylist's photo creation)

It was pretty delicious if I do say so myself.

Here's Martha's version:
