Kroger: How to Shop a Kroger Mega Sale
We wanted to put together a helpful guide on how to shop a Kroger Mega Sale for those of you that are new to couponing and/or couponing at a Kroger Mega Sale. Mega Sales always run for two weeks and the style varies slightly each time. We have seen “Buy 5 Save $5”, “Buy 10 Save $5”, “Buy 6 Save $3” and more. That being said, it is important to pay attention to the details of each sale cycle so you know how to shop.
What does “Buy X Save X” mean?
Each sale cycle there will be tags on participating items that say “Buy X Save X”, which indicate the number of items you will need to purchase to receive the sale discount. You MUST buy these participating items in the correct multiples to receive the discount on each item. If a Mega Sale is “Buy 5 Save $5”, then a $1 discount will be applied to each participating item purchased in multiples of 5. True Mega Sale shoppers like me are what I call “Obsessive Cart Counters”, constantly counting and recounting their carts to ensure you have the correct multiples. This is one step you CANNOT mess up!
Do I have to buy all the same item?
No! You can buy ANY of the items included on the Mega Sale list to get your multiples. Mix and Match away! For example… If Cheerios, Kraft Cheese Slices and Doritos are all included in a “Buy 5 Save $5” sale, you could purchase (2) Cheerios, (2) Doritos and (1) Kraft Cheese Slices and have your multiple of 5. Each of those 5 items would then be given the $1 Mega Sale discount automatically at the register. The final price after the Mega Sale discount is the price listed on the very bottom of the shelf tag. Usually this area is a blue or red box.
What if I Realize My Count Is Off At Checkout?
First, take a deep breath!!! Second, figure out how many items you were off by. If you haven’t paid, simply have them void the number of items you are off by. If you have already paid, Count them all up, or look on your receipt to see which items did not receive the credit. Mega Sale discounts will show up directly under the item on the receipt, so it’s pretty easy to tell, as long as you know what items on your receipt were included in the sale. Next, go to Customer Service and explain what happened. You will need to return the items that you were over by and repurchase them in the correct multiple, mixing with other items as needed. Or just simply return them and come back another day to repurchase!
Is there a limit to how many Mega Sale items I can purchase in One Trip?
No! You can purchase as many of the items as you wish, however if you are using coupons you will need to stay within both the Kroger Coupon Policy limits AND the manufacturer’s stated limits on the coupon. If you are wanting to make a large purchase of an item, it is best to call your local store manager and see if they can do a special bulk order for you. This prevents shelf clearing and gives everyone the opportunity to get in on the sale. Plus it saves you from having to go every day and grab only a few of an item. Often times management will let you use a larger amount of coupons on a bulk order too. Just call your local store and see what you can work out!
Do Clearance and Closeout Items Receive the Mega Sale Discount?
Yes! I LOVE when this happens! If you happen to find a Mega Sale item with a famous WOO-HOO sticker on it… GRAB IT AND RUN to the checkout!!! As long as you have your items in the correct multiples, the Mega Sale discount WILL even apply to clearance and closeout items. This is every Kroger shoppers dream situation!!!
When shopping, just look for the Mega Sale tags below the products just like the one pictured above. This will identify that the product is a Mega Sale item and let you know to add those products into your counts. Remember that the most important step in shopping a Mega Sale is keeping count of how many Mega Sale items you have in your cart. You need to be at even multiple at the end to receive the full discount on each item.
Each store should also have official Mega Sale brochures available during the sale that list all of the included brands. You can usually find these on a small display at the entrance to the store near the weekly paper ads. While this brochure will not usually have the exact sizes or pricing, it is a helpful guide when you are putting together your shopping list. Can’t find them in your store? We will also post the brochure for you the morning that a Mega Sale begins!
