Declutter To Save Time and Money
Clutter are items that do not have a place of their own or items you bought at a yard sale that you never needed, items that you used to love, items that you hope you will need.
Marie Kondo’s Netflix series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, debuted in early 2019 and the show gave rise to her de-cluterization method which teaches you to tidy by category.
If you are not sure where to start, here are five types of clutter that you can start with:
- Broken or Damaged items – If you have let a broken items sit around for six months, you should consider getting rid of it.
- Duplicates – You might have a legitimate reason to keep extras of an item, but most of the time it is unnecessary to keep both so keep the better one and get rid of the other.
- Items Not Used in a Year or Out of date technology – An item you haven’t used in a year is just taking up valuable space without being of any help. Search Earth 911 for a recycling collection point near you for all your old phones and chargers.
- Clothing That Does Not Fit – It is difficult trying to make room for all clothing that we need, so declutter any that don’t fit.
- Items That Don’t Belong to You – Library books, items that you borrowed from friends that you have been meaning to return.
Best benefits of decluttering:
- Less to clean : Cleaning is a tedious chore in itself, without you have to clean items that don’t make you happy anymore.
- Less to organize – If all things have a place, then finding things will be easier
- Less debt – If you are always going to ask yourself whether you need this item or if you want this item, then you will spend less time shopping. If you are buying online, add the items to cart and then sleep over it.
Target just unveiled its first-ever in-house home organization brand, called Brightroom. Offering more than 450 products, the collection covers everything from stacking food storage containers to hanging closet organizers, so you can tidy up every single area of your house.
Here are a few tips to prevent clutter from returning:
- Have a one in one out rule – when you buy something new, donate or get rid of something already in the house
- Before buying anything, ask yourself “if you really need it” and also if you have place in mind for it. If not then don’t buy.
- Try to declutter a little bit everyday – Keep 20 minutes a day aside to deal with common clutter like mail, toys etc…
