Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead. Books and DVDs.

We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Buy one then sell, donate or exchange it. Put your unwanted Halloween decorations out for reuse by donating them. Tip # 2 Recycle/reuse costumes. Don’t buy, make. Free Kids Crafts has some ideas.

However, I wait until spring and summer to buy decorations – and get them at garage sales. Stores also stock up on gift sets with cosmetics for the holidays and may need to move it fast in January. These get donated to thrift stores or placed in consignment shops so you might keep checking your local stores for these.

Fashion changes and new or nearly new clothing gets sold at sales or donated to charity. Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars). I used it for years and sold it – for $25 – last summer in my own garage sale.

Some get stuff from stores, the less financially favored head for thrift stores, garage sales, Mom’s house or the trash pickup routes. You donate to suitable charities. We lack all the stuff our parents spent years accumulating – stuff like furniture, cookware, bedding, and etc.

Check out some thrift stores, vintage stores, flea markets, and garage sales. If you can’t sell something, consider donating it and at least getting the tax write off. Just be sure to keep your receipts so that you can get the tax credit for the donation. But there is good news.
