We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Buy one then sell, donate or exchange it. Search the attic, the backs of the closets, the garage and see what inspiration presents. Dad’s old cowboy hat and a rope from the garage can be the start of a cowboy get up.

While I appreciate the thought, those toys don’t get used often, and I feel bad donating them or giving them away. I have a soft spot for good sales, whether they be at the local retail store (I bought way too many Gymboree shirts for my daughter when they were on sale for $3.99) or at a garage sale.

Fashion changes and new or nearly new clothing gets sold at sales or donated to charity. Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars). I used it for years and sold it – for $25 – last summer in my own garage sale.

Garage sales – I found a guitar for $5.00 once at a garage sale and bought it for my grandson. Relatives – Great Uncle Joe may still have that trumpet he used to play and might like to donate it to a future generation! Pawn shops – there are even some that specialize in musical instruments.

However, I wait until spring and summer to buy decorations – and get them at garage sales. These get donated to thrift stores or placed in consignment shops so you might keep checking your local stores for these. I always shop for Christmas wrapping paper, gift tags, boxes and really nice ornaments the week after Christmas.
