My Best Garage Sale Finds

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead. But, find one in a high end neighborhood, one where the store sorts through the donations to select only the best. Typical garage sale prices are $.25

We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Buy one then sell, donate or exchange it. If your child (or you) just has to have that store bought costume with all the non-biodegradable materials (you know, that one that costs you at least $20), then after its typical one time use, just donate to your local charity or sell it at your next garage sale or online.

Declutter Update #1

Family Balance Sheet

I pulled out clothes that I don’t wear and I’ll donate to the thrift store. The shoe shelf in our garage. On January 1st, I declared my word for 2014 to be DECLUTTER. I found myself feeling suffocated by our home, my schedule, my diet, our budget, and my mind, so I’m focusing on decluttering in 2014 and hopefully by the end of the year, I’ll feel much freer and less stressed. In the first 3 weeks of 2014, I have made some decluttering progress.

Wait, Don’t Buy That Yet!

Spending our precious and all too limited time searching online and in stores. Sure I knew about the ‘White sales’ – the ones stores used to have in January on sheets and towels and such, but I really hadn’t a clue that there is a best time to buy many other things! However, I wait until spring and summer to buy decorations – and get them at garage sales. For many, the end of the year holiday shopping frenzy can override our saner, more thrifty selves.

Fashion changes and new or nearly new clothing gets sold at sales or donated to charity. Here is a short list of some of my favorite finds at garage, estate and thrift store sales. I used an old seat cushion I had and wrapped it with brand new material from another garage sale to pretty it up and make it softer, then stacked new throw pillows I found at yet another sale for $.50 I used it for years and sold it – for $25 – last summer in my own garage sale.

Am I Frugal – or Cheap?

Plus, the styles that fit are usually made by the high end manufacturers and carried in exclusive (expensive) clothing stores. There is a lovely thrift store not far from my neighborhood that receives donations from the folks in the local golfing gated community. Sometimes I wonder about myself. All my life I’ve been careful with money, most of the time through necessity, but now just through habit.
