While I love the instant cash that you can get from a yard sale, this year a tax deduction will have to do. It's been awhile since I've taken a tax deduction over having a yard sale, so I did a little research. Unfortunately not everything in your home is considered a tax deduction if donated. One project that almost anyone can do with just a few of the right tools is painting. Pick out your desired paint color at the hardware store and ask the sales person what you will need to paint a room. If you can’t sell something, consider donating it and at least getting the tax write off.

Perhaps the county appraiser raised the appraised value of your home, thereby raising the taxes. You will want to know how to challenge the new appraisal and avoid spending more tax money. Sometimes the most financially rewarding scenario is to donate it to a tax deductible charity! Record Keeping.

Of course there are personal benefits as well – you save money by not buying or by buying used and you save money by not paying sales taxes for a new item. Before throwing away old clothing, I snip the buttons off and remove working zippers (unless I’m donating the item). Old clothing parts. Clothes pins.

If you keep your head and are persistent, you can find many things you want or need, all in near perfect condition, for a fraction of the cost with NO TAXES due. But, find one in a high end neighborhood, one where the store sorts through the donations to select only the best. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead.

Fashion changes and new or nearly new clothing gets sold at sales or donated to charity. Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars). Hubby re-painted it and has used it for many things around the yard and grounds.
