Operation Christmas Child: Using Your Stockpile To Donate

For the Mommas

If you have little money to donate, but have an overflowing stockpile, this opportunity is perfect. Even if you can’t prepare the entire box, find a church or organization that is accepting donations! In 2011 my two oldest sons wanted to have a shoebox packing party for their birthday and with the help of their friends they were able to pack 52 boxes. By shopping all year long I am able to get supplies to pack more boxes or donate to the packing parties at our Church.

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Whether you are asked to donate to charity , or whether your cousin needs a little help with his finances, we often get hung up on whether or not we have enough cash to help out. What Are Your Priorities? Choosing Where You Spend Your Time

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

In the past, a lot of my time has been devoted to earning money for my family and to raising my son. Now, with my freelance business doing reasonably well, and with my son almost to middle school , I have a little more free time. This year, I’m volunteering on the PTA board at my son’s school, and I’m getting involved in the community council. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want my life to look like, and how I want to spend my time.

Cutting Costs and Buying Used Clothes

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Before You Go Donate Items Before you go shopping, you will want to grab anything that you want to donate and take it with you. First, this helps you cut down on clutter, and second, it might make the employees more helpful if they know that you donate regularly. For example, focus on getting clothes for your daughter, then yourself, then your son, or focus on specific articles of clothing like shirts, pants, skirts, etc.

Apply Minimalist Principles to Your Life, and Reap the Financial Benefits

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Once we made the decisions to get rid of a lot of our possessions (we donated them to the thrift shop), we also decided to be careful about the amount of clutter we brought back in to the house. Not only did we get a tax deduction for our donations, but we also adopted a plan that prevents us from spending on things that will simply clutter up our home again. We also say no to excessive activities for our son, and I say no sometimes to other obligations.

If you buy your child a new doll, make sure that you donate or sell another one of her toys or you’ll end up with a toy room filled with toys your children don’t play with. I’ve taken pictures of my son’s favorite preschool paintings and drawings, and when I see a good deal on photo books, I’m going to create one for him and toss the originals. Relatives – Great Uncle Joe may still have that trumpet he used to play and might like to donate it to a future generation! We rented our son’s alto saxophone while he took lessons in high school. A good way to make friends at your local thrift stores is to bring in your old clothing and donate it. When the 8-year-old grows out of something, it is likely that your son can then use it. Back to school clothes shopping can be very expensive even if you only have one child. If your child attends a school with uniforms , then your shopping trip is fairly easy. Still, many schools do not have uniforms or strict dress codes.
