Participate in local food drives and donations and involve your kids in your actions. You can make it fun for you kids by running a household scavenger hunt in which you reward you children for finding household items to donate, such as clothes, toys, books, old appliances, and canned goods. Donate good clothing you really can’t use to a non-profit and bank the tax deduction. A good deal on a big bag of fresh lettuce isn’t thrifty if you can’t use it up before it rots. Making do was a proud tradition just a generation ago – it showed that you were smart, thrifty and responsible. Use up your food.
