After three years of blogging, I realized that I had a developed a rather severe case of Blogger’s Butt (aka Secretary Seat). You may laugh, but it is a really serious condition that causes butts to get very large. See there is a definition in the Dictionary Here. (ok its the Urban Dictionary, but that’s like Wikipedia right?)
My butt seems to have become the size of a small country over the last three years. I realized that I needed to get up and move. I found it incredibly hard to walk around with my laptop attached to me and still post deals. I love deals, I really do. However, I love smaller sized jeans even more.
So back in December, I started to exercise 4x a week. I found that I really like boxing and its not expensive at all. I got a pair of boxing gloves and a bag in my basement. I just take some time each day and do a little punching and kicking.
With the help and mentoring of Jason from N-Motion, I have made the incredibly dumb decision an amazing decision to run a Spartan Race in July. (If you are not familiar with the Spartan Races, check it out.) I apparently think I am superwoman, but even if I have to walk it, I will finish it. I might bleed or cry along the way, but I am going to do it.
Being serious, I don’t write much about my personal life here on FTM, but I know that many of us are struggling with fitness – whether you need to lose 100lbs or just get in better shape. So as long as you don’t mind, I think I may share along the way. I can’t wait to show you my new desk that helps eradicate bloggers butt!

Thanks for sharing. Small changes over time add up. I am so proud of you for exercising and signing up. I love my lifestyle change that I started about 11 years ago. I have lost about 140#s total.

Way to go, Shannon!
Please do continue to write about your progress. It will help motivate me to get back in the game, too.
And thanks for all you do. I follow you and a mom’s coupon forum exclusively. You really helped get my family’s budget back on track. :)

Thank you for sharing.

What a great posting…sometimes being personal is really relational. To feel connected over the internet is nice!
This post was motivational for me in the least and personal at the most… in the most positive way!
Heidi says
That’s awesome you signed up for the run! Signing up’s the hardest time sometimes. Keep up the great work!

I just want to share a way that I’ve lost weight (50+lbs) and really enjoy it (still!) I have more to go. I eat 100 calories an hour. So I eat anything I want, just limit it. I love the way this eliminates emotional eating, or promises to myself that I will start doing something about this tomorrow. I do exercise, but I had been exercising before and was still gaining/losing the same weight over and over. I needed to know how much my food was costing me. My energy has skyrocketed, and it will have you naturally moving around more. As for your race- You can do it!!!
Shannon says
Woohooo to you ! Congrats on 50+ lbs that is awesome!
Anne says
good luck!! my job has switched to being much more writing focused, so i know what you mean – forget writer’s block, it’s writer’s butt that causes the problems!!
i’ve been eyeing up that balance ball chair from gaiam – i saw it go down to about $60 on a target daily deal one time, but it was the first time i’d heard of it, so i didn’t get it. amazon goes to $68 every now and then, but i don’t know – i was thinking it might be good not just for posture and strengthening core, but for the times when i need a quick distraction from a paragraph, i could just do a set of crunches or obliques or some other quick balance ball exercise.
do you have any experience with it?
Shannon says
Anne —
I haven’t heard of that one before, but I sit at a elevated counter so I am not sure it would work for me, but I will check it out.

Hubby’s lost 40 lbs. since Thanksgiving. Lifestyle overhaul here at our house – which affected my couponing. Now I coupon for the Food Bank mostly, since we don’t eat 85% of what grocery stores sell. Still enjoy my great days at RA and CVS…even skinny people need toothpaste. :) Best of luck to you.

Congrats Shannon! This seems to be the year for many of us to get moving! I have been using sparkpeople since January and things are finally going in the direction I would like. Mostly I have been walking but we just joined the Y last week. I went to one water aerobics class that just wasn’t for me but I have another one to try that is Aqua Zumba. I can’t move like that on land so I am not sure what makes me think I can do it in water. Ha!
I still have all that “baby” fat and my youngest home grown kid is 9. May all our butts be smaller by this time next year. :)
I have a hair bow making butt. (27 lbs down and still counting!)
Shannon says
Wow 27lbs! Yeah! Congrats .. lol bow making butt.

I love this article – thanks so much – I think I had bloggers butt before I started blogging – I can’t wait to start my Aqua Zumba Class again next week – no computers in the water – just me, the music, the water and lots of fun!
Shannon says
LOL Maryln. Aqua Zumba sounds fun!

I would love to read about your progress, trials, and tribulations along the way! I made a conscious decision to get into better shape, myself, about two years ago. I don’t do as much as I would like to, but I run about 15-18 miles a week and do an hour cardio kickboxing class every Wednesday. I love reading about other people’s experiences! Best of luck!
Shannon says
Laura,
Wow that is great and encouraging that it can be done.
Holly says
Wow, I think I need a desk that will shrink my butt too. After 5 babies, that’s one area that stayed the same size as when I was pregnant! lol
Shannon says
Holly,
I still have baby thighs, hips and my baby is 10 :) !!!

Wow! Are you doing the 8mile Spartan Run? BIG TIP: Focus more on weight training than running 8miles straight. You won’t really be running- there’s too many obstacles/bad terrain. Pulling, lifting, and carrying will be the main challenges. YOU CAN DO IT!! Especially if you train better than I did. :-P I did this race after running a full marathon last year (26miles) so I figured, “Eh, run 8miles plus jump over a few walls.” UM, NO! lol Spartan was one of the hardest things I ever did. Seriously kicked my butt! But SUCH a blast!! <3 Grinning ear to ear when I finished. :)
Shannon says
Ohh Meredith, I am not sure if you scared me more or not! LOL
Jessica G says
I did one of these and did not train.. bad idea. My gf and I were a team – she was used to carrying a baby so at one pt she was running while carrying a bag of flour (5lbs). It was hard but so worth it. GOOD LUCK.
PS – I have deal-checker butt…. cause I sit on here to catch all the good deals!
Melody says
Shannon, if you have a small country thing going on then I must have a global thing at my desk, lol! I would LOVE to see what ideas you have for a fitness oriented desk! Fitness is a major topic in our home these lst few months as well. We have joined the Y and go at least 8 times a month (that gets us our 50% monthly fee back from our insurance). I have been trying to go more but life happens and when many stressors have found their way into your day it sort of fatigues you and exercise is the last thing you want! Please keep us posted of your success as you will be an inspiration to me in this facet of life just as you have been financially! All the Best to You!!!!!!!!!!

Melody,
Thanks for the support! Hopefully we can help each other along the way!
Karen says
OH, and do we call you ROCKY now, or did you pick out another name? I guess that would be ROCKETTE, but that sounds like a dancer, not a boxer….hmmmm…..
Karen says
Looking forward to seeing your new desk…..
GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!! I am sure you will accomplish your goal.
Shannon says
Thanks Karen! I appreciate it.

Tell me about it. I feel like my butt gets bigger by the hour sitting at the computer.
