6 Iconic Sandwiches To Try for National Sandwich Day
Are you ready to celebrate my favorite lunch item, sandwich? November 3rd is National Sandwich Day. November 3 is also the birthday of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. This 18th-century English noble wanted to eat his meal with one hand during a 24-hour gambling event, so he instructed his servants to serve him his lunchmeat between two slices of bread.
Rou jia mo – which translates to ‘”meat sandwich” – is a street snack that hails from the Shaanxi province in north-western China. It’s said to be the world’s oldest sandwich, dating back to the Zhou dynasty who ruled ancient China from 1046 BC.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a sandwich must contain at least 35% cooked meat and no more than 50% bread.
I have classified sandwiches into four types:
Regular or plain old sandwich – Two slices of bread with some sort of filling in the middle. This could be a peanut butter and jelly or a bologna and cheese sandwich.
Open Face Sandwich – Where we have one slice of bread and a filling on top. The bread slices could be squares, triangles, or rounds. One slice of bread is covered in food like eggs benedict or avocado toast.
Grilled – Grilled sandwiches are still just regular sandwiches with a filling between two slices of bread and then grilled. If you have ever eaten a cold cheese sandwich on bread and a grilled cheese with oozing cheese you would know why grilled has its own category
Stacked or Double Decker Sandwich – The definition of the sandwich is two “or more” pieces of bread with filling between, here is where the “more” come in like a double-decker club sandwich.
If you love sandwiches like me then let’s celebrate National Sandwich with some iconic sandwiches.

Egg Salad – One of the earliest known printed recipes for egg salad sandwiches was published in the 1896 edition of The Boston Cooking-School Cook Book written by Fannie Farmer. I like the egg in the center to be set yet moist which is why this is my favorite recipe.
