Keeping Your House Clean With Cats
I have a number of friends who have pet cats and a lot of them have messy home with cat hairs and cat smell all over the house. So, when my little one asked if we can keep a cat. I wondered if it was possible to have a clean house while living with a cat.
Here are some of the ways that I came across to have clean smelling house while having cats as pets.
Brush your cat – anyone who owns a cat, know that cat hair settles everywhere, sticks to furniture and clothes. Groom your cat daily with a brush. Brushing not only reduces shredding but it is also very relaxing, for the cat of course :)
Vaccum and dust regularly – Know that being a cat owner means a lot of vaccuming and dusting otherwise cat hair and stray litter will take over your house. A handy tip: wear rubber gloves dampen them slightly and wipe your hand across the furniture to remove the cat hair. Do this as often as necessary.
Don’t Feed The Cat in the Kitchen – Having the paws which has been in the litter box in kitchen where food is being prepared and eaten is not very healthy. Keep the cat bowls and water in another room and do put a mat under the bowls to catch any spills which will make cleaning a lot easier too. I have also seen automated cat feeder which replenishes the bowls at regular intervals. Cats love drinking fresh water, so do make sure their bowls always have fresh water.
Keep the Litter Box Clean – Cleaning the litter box daily is the most unpleasant tasks of living with a cat, as one of the ways you know a house has cats is the odor that comes from a poorly kept litter box. Keep a mat under the litter box to catch any litter clinging to paws stepping out of the litter box. When cleaning the litter box, you also need to clean the areas around the litter box.
Clean Kitty accidents ASAP – Clean cat messes as soon as you see them, as they put off some awful odors. If not cleaned immediately, the smells might set in and be difficult to get rid off. Cat urine is one of the worst messes and must cleaned immediately as it creates a acrid odor which is even more difficult to get rid off. Know that if an odor remains then the cat will continue to soil the same spot. Only if it was this easy to potty train a toddler.
Have a Blanket Just for Your Cat – Give your cat a blanket of its own and you can reduce the cat hair on bedding and furniture. If your cats has more than one place to snooze then keep blankets in all those areas too. Remember to wash the blankets regularly to keep the away the cat smells.
Use Baking Soda to Clean Furniture – Have you ever had a friend who doesn’t have a cat, walk into to your house and ask you “what is that smell”? It is because when you live with a cat for a long time, you get accustomed to some smells, which friends of yours who don’t have cats will notice. Baking soda is natural cleaner and safe to use. Sprinkle a generous amount of baling soda on the fabric and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then, vaccum the baking powder and all the funky smells will be gone.
