Thrifty Thinking: Cash Back to Offset Inflation

Making the holidays merry, can also leave your checking account looking not-so-bright. It’s the most wonderful time of year, yet also the most expensive! Shopmium Savings Expert Lisa Thompson offers easy ways you can recoup some of that cash while holiday shopping:

Use a cash back app for everyday purchases.

One word: Shopmium. This is a free app, new n the U.S., that just hopped across the pond from Europe. Use it to get cash back on everything from groceries, to pet care items, beauty products, cleaning supplies, and more!

How it works: Download the app from the App Store or Google Play. Create an account, then browse the wide range of cash back offers. Activate the offers you like before you go shopping. Once you purchase the item (at any retailer that offers a receipt), you then snap a picture of the receipt in the Shopmium app, submit, and boom—cash back shows up in your linked PayPal account - it's that simple. No minimums, no payout dates, just an immediate transfer of cash. It’s like getting free money!

Get cash back when you shop online.

This is another easy way to save! Before you hit PURCHASE when you’re shopping online, always look for coupon codes and cash back offers first!

My tip is to use the browser extensions from Rakuten and PayPal Honey. They’ll notify you of savings opportunities when they have a coupon or cash back offer. It’s like having a shopping BFF with you saying, “Hey wait—use this coupon code, you’ll save 15%.” Or, “Hey! Activate this offer—you’ll get 10% cash back!” I don’t buy a thing online without using a cash back offer or some type of coupon code, even if it’s just for free shipping.

Get cash back with your credit cards.

Did you know that most credit cards have deals and offers attached to them? You just have to know where to find them.

Example: I love my Platinum American Express, but to justify the annual fee, I take advantage of every perk it offers and I use it to earn cash back. At the bottom of the app, there’s a little tab called (appropriately) “Offers.” I tap it, and it opens up a treasure trove of cash back opportunities! You simply tap an offer to activate it, and when you buy the correct item, you automatically get cash back in the form of a statement credit.

The really great news: I can double up my cash back. Let’s say I want to earn cash back on Ghirardelli chocolates with my Shopmium offer. If I also have an offer attached to my credit card for the retailer where I’m purchasing my chocolates, I can use both! They’re two different offers that work in different ways on the backend, and that means that I get to reap the benefits of getting cash back in two different ways on the same purchase.

If you make it a habit to check your cash back apps for both in-store and online shopping - PLUS tap into your credit cards offers for the rewards they provide before you shop, you can earn enough cash back in December to extend your holiday budget—or maybe even put it towards covering next year’s streaming service subscriptions.
