My best tip for staying healthy during the holidays is make sure that you don’t decide to throw out healthy eating for the whole season. Our health. We lost our 21 year old daughter and hubby has had a heart attack and I have RA. Our other kids have problems. So I cook organic and low carb and we really make an effort to eat well. Hubby and I hike 3 miles EVERY day and the kids who are grown are encouraged to eat well and exercise, and I make food for them also to help out.
My parents struggle with leukemia and heart disease so we want to avoid whatever we can.
That is our motivation.

I’m getting married in May (to an absolutely amazing man) so of course the holidays are going to be a time of temptation and over eating. I’m a teacher full time and right now my classes are reading one of my favorite novels. I read outloud to them daily from the book and when I do, I make sure I walk around the room and be as animated as I can instead of sitting in a chair. This way, I’m at least getting some sort of a workout instead of just being on my behind all day. Also, wearing high heels is a great calf workout. My fiance loves how mine look!

I remind myself that I don’t have to eat until I’m full. Lindsey Valentine says
This is the busiest time of the year so many of us can’t imagine giving up 10 mins of free time much less 30 mins a day to exercise. So my best advice I can give is take a few minutes throughout the day – everything is an opportunity to exercise (of course take the stairs instead of the elevator – its usually faster too), but look for opportunities that are less obvious. Such as when you get to put milk in your morning coffee do 10 arm curls with the gallon of milk, while your driving to work at the red lights or traffic do glute squeezes, while on the telephone do squats or toe raises or crunches. All of these exercises take very little time and can be done while multi tasking – plus you don’t usually get sweaty.
And when it comes to diet save all the sweet parts of Thanksgiving for the end – Cranberry sauce is always had at the end of the meal so we feel like we had a mini dessert and don’t crave the other sweets as much. Think about what you want to have and what you should have and eat what you should have first – then before you go back for round 2 sit and talk for 5 mins to let you food digest so you wind up eating only what your body can handle and avoid that overly stuffed feeling – you can always go back for what you want, but you’ll be less hungry then you were before. Good luck to everyone this holiday season – who needs to spend money to have an amazing holiday season!

Limit your portions! Even better, if you have a sweet tooth… get the frozen fruit- great value brand works just as well as the other brands, great value vanilla yogurt (freeze the night before and throw in the microwave for 20 secs to loosen it up when your ready to make your smoothie), a little milk and you have a wonderful sweet tooth cure. This helps you to avoid the holiday desserts and the holiday “beverages”.

I have spent the last year changing my eating habits to become healthier. I am 2 lbs. away from my goal weight of 120lbs. and everyone wants to know what my secret has been. It’s pretty simple. Make wise choices and don’t keep anything in the house that is not in line with your goals (ie: NO potato chips!). Read every label before you put the food in the cart at the grocery store and keep those fat grams down to single digits per serving. After a while, you’ll be amazed how much weight you lose and by just eating healthy. You aren’t hungry, because you still eat good and full meals.

Try to make activity part of your holiday routine. For several years, my rowing club held an annual “Thanksgiving morning row” that was early enough to give people time to get home for cooking and eating. In colder climates, you could go sledding, ice-skating, or whatever sounds fun to you!

I try to make sure there are plenty of fruits and veggies year round but during the winter I try to keep enough on hand for daily veggie trays especially when my kids have friends over. I also have a huge bowl of oranges on the counter. There is too much sugar in a glass of orange juice compared to an actual orange. Its funny to watch ones kid start to peel an orange most of the others will too.
We also spray door knobs, and light switches daily with an all natural disinfectant

The holidays are a hard time for us because of all the traveling we do and of course all the yummy food! I have been trying to work with myself and my kids more on portions, I know I don’t want to pass up that pumpkin pie! So I am trying to remind myself that just a little, tiny piece will still satisfy the craving I have and who knows maybe I will skip the cool whip?!

Some times its hard to fit in a full work out during our busy schedules. Try to fit in a few minutes here or a few minutes there whenever you find yourself with some extra minutes. If you are waiting at the bus stop for your children, put the balls of your feet on the curb with your heels off, then raise your heels so you are almost standing tiptoe. Then lower them so they are below the level of the balls of your feet. You can get a good workout for your calves that way. While you are cleaning house, put on the music and dance! It makes the dreaded chore of housecleaning a little easier and much more fun! Find other ways you can add a few minutes of exercise to your day!

One rule we use is: After eating a healthy portion, we drink a glass of water and wait 15 minutes before second helpings. This helps your stomach catch up to the food you’ve stuffed in and we always need more water in our diets.
