For the rest of you, keep gasoline usage in mind. Opening windows and turning on fans at the right times can go a long way toward regulating the temperature of a house. If you are one of the few people who can live without an automobile by all means help out your wallet, air quality, and traffic by getting rid of your car.

That way, I can hit a lot of sales in just a few hours instead of spending time and gasoline driving around town. In my area, garage sales run spring, summer and fall – usually starting on Friday morning and running through Saturday about noon. I look for the neighborhood sales, which are usually either in spring or fall.

Teach your children the importance of water and energy conservation and reward them for turning off lights and fans when they leave the room, or by limiting their personal water usage by taking condensed showers, turning facets off in the midst of washing hands or brushing teeth, and only washing dishes or doing laundry with a full load.

People opened their windows and used attic fans or sat in metal lawn chairs outside to cool off. Gasoline stations did not serve food, have coffee or provide bath rooms. Ours was smaller (about 700 square feet) – 2 bedrooms (my brother and I shared one and my parents the other), a kitchen and a living room, No basement or garage.
