Healthy Habits: Oxford Healthspan

Leslie Kenny is on a mission. A mission to make aging as easy as possible. Owner of the supplements company, Oxford Healthspan, this Californian, discovered the benefits of spermidine while having conversations with research doctors in her local playground in Oxford, England.

Struggling with Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis and being told she had 5 years to live, Leslie went on a mission to discover how she could cure her body and fell into discovering the wonders of autophagy, which spermidine induces in the body, so she was very much open to these conversations.

Doctors she met in Oxford informed her that it could take up to 10 years to get a supplement approved and onto the market, so Leslie decided to do it herself and that’s when Oxford Healthspan was created and their first supplement Primeadine Premium Spermidine was born.

Currently available in two formats - gluten free and regular, this supplement already has plenty of fans including James Van Der Beek’s wife and Kelly Rutherford.

I had a chance to interview her to learn more.

Can you explain a little bit about what autophagy is

Autophagy is the body’s cellular renewal and recycling process where old and damaged cells are broken down and disposed of by the body’s own systems. You may have heard of it in connection with the popular eating/dieting trend intermittent fasting, as not eating for a period of time is a way to induce autophagy in our bodies, too.

However, there’s an easier way to do it without foregoing breakfast and lunch. Primeadine Sperimidine from Oxford Healthspan induces autophagy naturally and all it takes is taking one dose a day.

What is the role of supplements in health?

Supplements are a simple and effective way to enhance your health and fill in gaps that might be missing in your day to day diet.

What do people need to look for to make sure they're getting quality supplements?

The most important thing to look at when it comes to choosing your supplements is that they meet rigorous testing to ensure you are getting what is promised on the bottle and also to ensure there are no heavy metals, bacteria, mold or other toxins.

Our Primeadine Spermidine supplements are made using raw materials from Japan, which is known for having one of the most rigorous food testing and safety regimes in the world. For instance, coffee that is found to be inferior in Japan won’t gain entry at import and instead sent to the US for sale. As our supplement is entirely food derived - the safety and efficacy of synthetic spermidine has never been tested in humans - we want it to meet the exceedingly high standards of the Japan Health Food and Nutrition Food Association. Japan also has the most advanced extraction process which allows us to remove the very fragile Omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids that can quickly go rancid in wheat germ along. On the manufacturing side, our spermidine is encapsulated in an FDA cGMP facility in the US and undergoes additional purity testing there as well. Unlike other companies that add flow agents to make manufacturing cheaper, such as magnesium stearate and talc, we don’t.

We also work closely with our Japanese partners to make sure we are on top of the latest science on autophagy since they lead the world in Nobel prize winning research on autophagy. In fact, we are the only non-Japanese member of the Japan Autophagy Consortium which is advised by the Nobel Laureate, Yoshinori Ohsumi.

So strict adherence to quality standards in raw materials, manufacturing and science are the things to look out for.
