We have significant food restrictions so sourcing our own is helpful health-wise & cost-effective too. Used bookstores, fair trade products, and locally sourced food/baskets/pottery are favorites, in addition to monthly outings with my kids. We have several food intolerances/needs so cooking is just mostly easier/cheaper.

While shopping secondhand can be a great way to save, don’t skimp when safety is on the line. For instance, car seats have expiration dates.

Food/shopping. Fast food was rare. Most food at the grocery store came from the USA. The only discount store was the 5 and dime aka ‘the dime store’ It did not sell food (except 1 penny candies). Gasoline stations did not serve food, have coffee or provide bath rooms. People cooked and ate at home.
