Recycling is great for the environment and we should all be doing it (in spite of my title), but reusing is even better. When you can reuse or re-purpose an item, you are not only saving it from the landfills, but you are also saving the expense and energy which would have been expended when you recycle. She has always reused food containers, such as glass pickle jars or plastic cool-whip and sherbert containers, so I am not quite sure how or why I got started buying plastic food storage containers. The glass jars are perfect for storing my homemade sugar-free applesauce , homemade chicken stock , and roasted tomato sauce in the freezer.

According to the organization Waste Free Lunches , the average school-age child eating lunches in disposable packaging generates some 67 pounds of waste per school year. Everything in that lunch bag can be washed and reused or at least an be dealt with in an environmentally-friendly manner. The list goes on and on.

We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Tip # 2 Recycle/reuse costumes. Like me, buy them used and then reuse them each year. Free Kids Crafts has some ideas. Put your unwanted Halloween decorations out for reuse by donating them. Tip # 4 on decorations.
