Netflix has recently extended their free trial from two weeks to one month.
I was a member of Netflix years ago and I was surprised how much it changed. My friend Danielle told me that she doesn’t have cable tv, just Netflix. I signed up last week and Evan has been watching old movies and tv shows all week. It is $7.99 for unlimited streaming and 1 DVD rental at a time. The unlimited movies can be streamed from your computer, Wii, Apple Tv and more.
So, if you use Netflix, do you think its worth the $7.99 – trying to decide if we should keep it!

Hubby and I also only have netflix instead of cable. The streaming is great if you like to watch tv shows and older movies. The newer movies aren’t often available for streaming so we tend to use free redbox codes for those.
Laura says
Can you stream the more educational channels like National Geographic, History Channel, HGTV, Science Channel? I am not technical, so how hard is it to get this all set up? I do have Wii, my kids connect and disconnect it to the tv when they want to play with it.
Shannon says
@Laura,
My son spent last saturday watching fishing documentaries on it. I am not 100% sure about what they exactly have as far as the other channels actually programming, but sounds like other readers can tell you since they have used it alot longer than me.

I’m considering going the Netflix route. Blockbuster has been getting on my last nerve lately. I understand that they are doing what they can to survive, but the in-store prices went up, and they reinstated late fees, so it actually costs more to rent in the store than to go to the Blockbuster Kiosk. I guess they figure people will be willing to pay more for the larger selection in store.
If I go to Netflix route, I think we’ll only go back to Blockbuster when we want something specific.

I love Netlix. We do the one DVD at a time for $10.59 (including tax) a month, which includes streaming. We can watch on our Wii or PS3 or Ipod Touch. Maybe it’s our internet, but we never have any disruptions. The instant movie selection I dont think is the best, but I love instant watching television series with no commercials. I watched all of Lost and am almost done catching up with Grey’s Anatomy.
We do not have cable, so I also purchased Hulu Plus for $7.99 a month. Hulu Plus is great for current season shows and it seems they are adding channels all the time. It’s only available on our PS3 and Ipod Touch right now. Hopefully it will be on the Wii, too, soon. My daughter loves watching Biggest Loser and Minute to Win It.
We do have an antennae, but can only get a few channels in the upstairs bedroom. As much as we run around to different activities, work, and school, cable just wasn’t worth it.

We don’t have TV, but we love Netflix. We stream through the Wii, and the supply of decent things to watch is great. I definately think it’s worth it.

I love netflix. The movies that are available to watch instantly, via streaming video, change constantly and keep getting added to, so we haven’t gotten tired of it yet. We use the one real dvd we get to order stuff that’s really new or just not available on instant. But most nights we watch something on instant. We don’t have cable anymore and we don’t miss it. I should say we have two teenaged kids so I don’t know what the little kids selection is like, but for older kids and adults it’s great. We had a Clint Eastwood jag, then a Bruce Willis jag, then a Will Ferrell jag, then a Godzilla jag. But even if you don’t like action or silly, there’s a lot to choose from.
BAVC says
We don’t watch much in the way of TV shows, so this is based exclusively on the watch instantly movies. Their selection is not great in my opinion. We have had it 5-6 months and I think we have exhausted all the Watch instantly movies that we could possibly want to watch. A lot of the watch instantly ones are a bit more obscure and less popular movies. That is not to say they don’t have some great ones! We have had fun with it, but I think we have maxed out our enjoyment for the time!

We’ve had netflix for about a month and a half now. They do a wide selcetion. I don’t know if they advertise it or not, I was told this by a friend at work, and called netflix to confirm. They have a far greater selcetion of streaming movies/shows available on the computer then what you would get it you looked for things to watch through your tv (we use the wii). But you can select it on your computer and place it in your instant queue, so then you can watch it on your tv whenever you want. Hope this helps.
We dont have small kids so I cant say how great the selection is, but I know I’ve seen some cartoons, barney, caillou, dora, ect (just from memory) as I’ve looked through to see what they have.
Holly says
what kind of kids shows can u stream in? i have never used netflix, and we only have basic cable. do they have playhouse disney? or other toddler disney movies? thanks!
Amy says
@Holly, You can stream Nick, Disney, PBS and tons of other shows. You can stream the Starz movie channel live onto your computer. Starz always has all the new Disney movies, The Princess and the Frog, Alice in Wonderland and more.
Irene says
we had it for a while; the streaming was a PITA though, because in a movie, it would change between SD and HD many times, depending on how fast your internet is. I got tired of the disruptions.
Andrea says
We “share” it with some friends and family. You can set up the account on more than one device, so there are three of us who use the streaming and then just one of us gets the DVDs in the mail. I absolutely love it. Its great! I use it often and we have DirectTv and DVR. I DEFINITELY think its worth the 8 or 10 bucks (especially when you’re splitting it!) That’s MUCH cheaper than paying for cable or satellite. Also, I don’t know the prices , but there is also Hulu plus (or something like that). I know several people who just pay for the Hulu service and the Netflix service and don’t have any cable/satellite because they can watch pretty much anything that way.

We have been members since the beginning. When streaming was added it was awesome. When DH had surgery this summer and again a few weeks ago he was never bored, found some great old shows and movies to watch everyday! Well worth the $9.99.. just 1 rental from BB is $4.99!
I love that I can play catch-up on a TV series a friend turned me on to, now I am on top of the lunch conversation!
By, the way Happy Anniversary!

And if you have Swagbucks you can sign up for the Netflix free trial and get swagbucks too!

I think it depends on how often you watch movies/tv shows. We very rarely rent movies and don’t have a tv so after our Netflix gift subscription expires we are going to cancel. It seemed as if we “needed” to watch more stuff so that we would get our monies worth. YouTube has a bunch of stuff available if we do get a hankering to watch a movie. Although I must say my 2 yr old is going to miss Thomas the Tank Engine!
jennifer says
we love it too! We got rid of cable about a year ago and started doing netflix a few months ago and love it!
Christi M. says
We don’t have cable or satelite, so Netflix is our only source of TV. We love it. I think it’s a great deal.
Carolyn says
We love it.. but it is $9.99 for us for 1 DVD and unlimited streaming… it is $7.99 for streaming only. We dont have cable.. so it is nice to have something to watch when the mood strikes.

If someone has Verizon FiOS or TV from Verizon:
They have 3 month free trials on all Movie packages, Moviestar, HBO, SHowtime and so on (also international channels if you ask!)
Just call the hotline and tell them you wanna try one of these. After 3 month watching it for free call the hotline again and cancel the subscription and ask for another free trial. We did this since the beginning of 2010 and it works perfectly! Each movie package gives you 30 channels at least! You just can’t have the same movie package again for a certain period.

My son loves it, and netflix is always adding new titles!
Erin says
We love it. Can’t live without our Netflix. We’ve been members since 2002.

I <3 Netflix!!!! We hadn't used the streaming feature much until 3 or 4 months ago. It's so ridiculously easy to use and has some wonderful children's series available. They have really upped the number of things available online and those that aren't, just use the traditional Netflix. We use it nearly EVERY day (and more when I need a Mental Health break :)
Christie says
I love the free streaming! Definitely worth it, we cancelled HBO, which was a big savings.

WE LOVE IT!!
