Moms Weigh In On 9 Ways to Get MORE Everyday Value
1. In the Kitchen: Get inventive in the kitchen to make dinnertime both delicious and fun. Use leftover cereal as ice cream toppings. Freeze stale bread for bread pudding, croutons or bread crumbs. And schedule theme nights such as Meatless Monday, Taco Tuesday, or Pizza Friday to excite your family about dinner time while managing a hungry family’s expectations!
2. On the Weekends: Take advantage of your surroundings by signing up for annual museum and zoo memberships. Provide your kids with an affordable cultural experience again and again for just one yearly price. Also, consider taking the kids to a discounted matinee movie versus the regularly priced feature.
3. During the School Week: Once a month, prepare a set of freezer meals for dinner time. That way when you get home from work and the kids get home from school, you can just pop one in the oven, freeing up time to sit and talk with your family.
4. With Your Neighbors: Rally your friends and families together and have a huge clothes and shoes swap. Get great gear for the kids without breaking your bank at the mall – especially since they outgrow things so fast!
5. Towards your Bills: Once a week practice a NO ELECTRICITY DAY. Don’t use TV’s, games, or computers. Enjoy board games, puzzles, books, picnics and other activities with your family. In other words, have some good old-fashioned FUN!
6. On the Web: Surf your favorite blogs and sites for coupons and other great deals! Visit www.Tonys99DaysOfMore.com to play Tony’s 99 Days of MORE instant-win game. You can enter every day (once a day) for chances to win great prizes such as $500 VISA gift cards to put towards anything you want – from groceries to video games for the kids!
7. For Special Occasions: Get creative when wrapping gifts or sending cards. Consider making a homemade card for someone’s birthday, or save old greeting cards and cut up to use as gift tags. Consider wrapping presents in recycled paper and let your kids decorate the outside!
8. In Your Community: Make use of the public library. It’s a great resource for videos, games and books, and free internet.
9. Around the House: Think about how you can repurpose things around the house before you discard. For example, save your mint tins, to store small nick-knacks or hair ties and tissue boxes for plastic bags!

The best way to get more? Once or twice a week, try using leftovers to make a pot of soup! It doesn’t have to be fancy and nearly EVERYTHING can be used – use canned broth and add your leftover meat/veggies/potatoes/rice…whatever. Even mashed potatoes, which will thicken the stock you add. If need be, add a can of beans, and, though I’m not keen on them, the occasional can of vegetables! Bring to a boil and then simmer for a half hour or so. Nutritious, fast and no waste!

My biggest tip is to cook two beef roast or roasting chickens at a time. This way you have a second meal that is quick for a busy night of the week. I use the leftover meat for stew, soup, BQ’s, beef pot pie and so on.

Coupons, coupons and coupons, especially the ones that let me get stuff for free. That’s why I check your posts first before I go shopping. Also, sign up for newsletters from the company/services that we use anyway. Every once in a while, it pays off.

Rite Aid has been my favorite store to get “more” recently! I have been making “money” hand over fist! Some weeks more than $50 in +ups! Roll those for the next weeks deals and you have even more! Last week I had $127 in +ups with only tax out of pocket. Blogs like FTM help me snag the best deals, too! :-)

I like to save the plastic cups that apple sauce comes in. I reuse them to hold dip when I eat chips and dip. It’s also the perfect size for children’s snacks.

Get More Tip:
Switch to cloth wipes for baby. just tear up scraps of flannel, even those classic striped hospital receiving blanket. keep a stack of them in an old wipes container and pour on a solution of water, a little baby oil, and a little baby wash. Better yet, invest in an electric wipes warmer. It is like giving baby a little bath at each diaper change. Grab a wipe whenever you need one–dusting, wash a face, nosebleed. collect the used wipes in a wetbag and toss in the laundry.

One way that we “get more” in our lives is along the lines of the cereal for ice cream toppings. We use the leftovers from our cereal as mix-ins for our brownies. It’s amazing how yummy frosted flakes and rice krispies can taste surrounded by chocolate!

#9 is my fave tip and one that I do all the time. I store paper clips and safety pins in plastic Gerber containers from when my daughter was a baby. I store some scrapbooking supplies in baby formula canisters. I use old shoe boxes to organize my smaller items in my stockpile and to organize food storage containers. You name it, I try to repurpose it!
And I already like (only b/c love isn’t available) FTM on FB! ;)

My favorite tip for getting more, is printing FTM store deal pages and following them to the letter, then when I’m shopping and know that I have more coupons than I can use I give them to people looking at the product and then I tell them about FTM and how easy they make the match ups for you, I have ended up with 10 people around me asking me to tell them how to save with coupons and what the name of the website is that I’m talking about (FTM) and of course I now have everyone at work addicted to FTM and saving money. I also put together goody bags full of free stuff that I get from the information on FTM and give them out at work, shelters, and send them to my daughter and her friends in college!!! And to think I have only been at this for a month, give me a year and all of South Florida will be reading FTM and nobody will ever pay retail price again. I know this is not a tip for those who already read this blog, but sharing the saving’s and information which is valuble is a great tip!!

Amber H: One thing our neighborhood does that I love is a kind of “Swap Meet.” People drop of anything from clothes, to home decor, books, movies, kitchen gadgets (really anything) and then others come and take what they want. I can’t tell you how many practically new clothes I’ve gotten from them as well as some awesome books and toys for my little one. Love them because I get things for free, plus others can use the things I’m not. :)

I like the 2nd idea, thats what we do. With 4 kids and of course my teenager always has to bring a friend we have a pass to the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village and one for the Detroit Zoo. We dont pay for movies since my brother runs a theater, but we always used to go to the early shows like 10 am for the best ticket prices.
