Empty shelves at the grocery store, that is all you will find here in the bread, water and peanut butter aisles right now. I just got off the phone with someone asking if I had any spare peanut butter, because they cannot find any, anywhere. I saw my neighbor in the store and she needed toilet paper.
Well, at times like this — my stockpile comes in handy. To get ready for this, I opened up my pantry – plenty of peanut butter, jelly, cereal and frozen bread in my fridge— and I wasn’t paying full price last minute. I did was able to spend $23 and stock up on snacks that I don’t normally keep in the house.
So, I said to my friend – are you laughing at me now?
On a serious note, to everyone who is in the path of the hurricane – please stay safe! Our biggest concern is a power outage and flooding here. We tend to lose power with every storm.

I will be thinking about you and your family during this scary weather. How thankful your family must be having you and your stockpile ready.
Florence says
Glad to see you and your regular readers are well prepared for this, praying for everybody’s safety.

I stocked up on wine and cupcakes because our pantry stockpile had everything I needed, too. so no need to fight the lines at the store. It pays to coupon! Praying for everyone to stay safe.

I laughed out loud when I read your post. Wine and cupcakes. Wow! I am so curious as to if the cupcakes were for the kids and the wine for the adults, or was it all to share?

You wanna know what my Giant was out of today???? Bananas and strawberries…seriously??? I actually was planning a trip to the store today ANYWAY and wanted to get more fruit. No bananas and no strawberries. This makes no sense to me.

I LOVE your pantry too! Wish mine had such pretty shelves and was so organized! I am in PA too and have brought in all the things outside that I could! Hopefully, Irene loses force as she comes inland! Oh and yes, I am stocked and only needed to pick up milk and creamer for my coffee yesterday! Hee! Hee!
Nicole W. says
Shannon, I love how your pantry is organized! I hope you and yours stay safe during the hurricane.

We have at least 4 jars of PB and PLENTY of cereal to get us through, but somehow, we ate all the bread and yogurt this week! Luckily we have bagels, and I am firing up the bread machine :) :) Let’s get through this weather, ladies!!
Raina says
I love your pantry! I’ve been begging my hubby to set up shelves in the basement so I can be that organized :) Kudos to you for sharing with others. I’ve done that too.

I tried to get to some distilled water today to make pickles since I was out anyway doing the clorox deal and there was no water to be found in the entire store. Guess my pickles will have to wait.
Diana says
Great post! I know…I went out and did the Clorox deal and free Oikos and free cat food before it started raining. I certainly had enough necessities in my pantry! And a big seven layer taco salad I made waiting in the fridge for us!
Sherry says
I am with you on the stockpile! We are expecting power outages and flooding and I didn’t have to step foot in the grocery store. It is a comforting feeling knowing my family is provided for if things get nasty tonight.
Grace says
My Giant was stocked up on everything, but it was just a mad house in there. Between back to school shoppers and this hurricane hitting at the same time …. it was bad.
I did end up getting all my cleaning supplies with $off gas deals and some extra treats for the rainy day we are expecting tomorrow :)
Noelle@Frugality in the Hudson Valley says
You’re pantry is so VERY NEAT and ORGANIZED.
Stay safe.
Holly says
I was pleasantly surprised that my Giant was still pretty well stocked this morning when I went out for some normal groceries. I saw lots of “temporarily out of stock” signs but they had everything I needed.
Kelly says
Ha! There are a few people I would like to say the same thing to! I went out and purchased some gallon water jugs, 2 bags of chips and WHITE bread for a special treat and that was it! :)

The store MGR @ Rite Aid laughed *with me* as people were looking for batteries, milk, etc and he was like “I know you’re not buying that stuff”! Yea – I was in there buying some tabloid mags and some free hand sanitizer :)
I took some loaves of bread our of the freezer and grabbed some PB+J and water off the shelves in the garage and we are just waiting it out!
Anne says
LOL That is funny!

Even before I started watching what I spend, we always kept a “storehouse” (what we call a pantry in the basement aka 2 metal shelves) of non-perishables. You don’t have to hoard, but having enough “just in case” supplies is always a good idea, especially in the winter when you might get snowed in!
Anne says
Don’t forget pets!
Anne says
Stay safe!

i’m in Nevada, but this has got me thinking hard, i had tons of PB form wic and gave it to my family since there hitting hard times, and this is what i should be stocking on you never know, not to be funny i think us is las vegas will bake to death we this world does end, but for now let all be happy for what we have all be safe, but buy our stock pile helping other, we help other by not fanatically clear shelf in a time of need, hopefully this wont actully hit.
Sonya Parga says
Awesome to think that we can not only help our family and friends out at times like these with our stockpiles but can also help our our communities and not go broke doing so!
Mary says
Be safe and ride it out. Hope you do not lose power.
Even with my coupon using skills I can never keep my pantry in stock. I live with all guys and recently a new addition of a female. I went to my cabinet for dental floss of which I thought I had enough for ten years only to find 2, yes that’s right 2, new packages of dental floss. I think my family disregards my savings and stocking up as a disposable pantry and closet.Oh, I would also die for a nice pasta meal with sauce. I crave it on occasion but every time I do it seems to be all used up. 8 (
Julie says
I so understand, I feel like my stock pile always has holes due to this… I think I need the overflow under lock and key… maybe then it would help. And just have a small closet with a small stash to use more freely:)
Jennifer says
Under your bed!! Keep some of everything there. At one time, I had a three months supply of food for a family of four under one double bed. With some people, monetary threats also help. For example: “If you take something from the supply cupboard without telling me, I will charge you full retail price for it”. You can also keep an inventory sheet on the inside of the closet, so that nobody can tell you that you are crazy for thinking that you had 10 dental floss, and now there are only two. I raised 6 children and an infantile husband; I have been there.
Randi says
I am so glad you posted this. So many times couponers have to listen to people tell them that their “stockpiling” is unethical. To me, it is far more unethical to be at the store during an emergency being one more person competing for limited supplies when I could have avoided it.

Great post! I love this! I am sorry to hear about the possible circumstances surrounding your area regarding the hurricane, but glad you will be prepared!
