Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. In my area, garage sales run spring, summer and fall – usually starting on Friday morning and running through Saturday about noon. I look for the neighborhood sales, which are usually either in spring or fall.

Garage sale and thrift store furniture bargains abound. Our home furnishings include many cherished family heirlooms, such as an iron bed my folks bought at a sale, or the hand carved bed frame purchased by my great-grandfather. Furniture is expensive, no doubt about it.

Last week I visited a garage sale. I didn’t feel obligated, but did end up buying another package of it at that sale! Just sit through the sales presentation and then take advantage of the ‘free’ advice. Another way sales personnel try to get you to buy is to invest time their time with you. We’ve all seen the ads that proclaim Sale ends Saturday, hurry while supplies last! And furnish it with love.

Things like he matching bedroom set, the lovely drapes, the brand new lawn equipment, and beautifully coordinated nursery furnishings. Maybe you put it at the curb, hoping someone will take it and use it – or you sell it at a garage sale or some other used stuff venue.

How I Saved $1400 by Upholstering My Chairs

Maybe it is just something you found at a sale that doesn’t quite match your decor. I own a condo at a local lake that came furnished. Two heavy wing back recliners were among the furnishings. Along the way, on one of my garage sale shopping expeditions, I stumbled across a matched pair of wing backs (non-reclining) for $20 each. I was able to find the material for one chair on clearance – for $40 total and on sale for the other.
