Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead. My best finds.

Just look at the many people scouring garage sales in the summer. Likewise, thrift stores are always full of people. While they may have had to buy used in the early days of their marriage, they now likely have enough money to buy new, but they choose not to. Their motto is “Buy used and save the difference.”

Sure I knew about the ‘White sales’ – the ones stores used to have in January on sheets and towels and such, but I really hadn’t a clue that there is a best time to buy many other things! You may decide you don’t need or want the item at all if you push yourself to wait to get a bargain on it! Other tips.

A smile or a word from a parent or teacher, seeing someone enjoying their savings, a chance combination of a happy conversation, a sun shiny day and an increased amount in the piggy bank – all may result in one child’s brain being wired towards the pleasure of saving. As teenagers, we may be madly saving up for a car.

Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars). At garage sales, are you attracted to those still usable but slightly defective items that no one else wants? If so, the new fixer movement may be for you! He was a trained radio and TV repairman, when those had tubes. I wish he was still around. I’ve got a lot of things that need fixing! If so, you are in the minority.
