If you shop at Rite Aid, you probably a few cans of Hormel Chili. I tried it and gave my not-so-raving review here. Many of you told me that it wasn’t so bad in this dip (see comments). Honestly, I didn’t believe you. I mean, I really didn’t believe you. I thought for sure you had burnt off all your taste buds.
Alas, I was wrong. Yep. Please do not tell my husband I admitted to the world I was wrong. The Hormel Chili dip was tasty. In fact, Evan asked me to make more. No problem kiddo, we have about 12 cans of it.
So here is my adaptation of the recipe.
- 2 cans of Hormel Chili with Beans
- 1 block of cream cheese
- 1/2 red onion – chopped
- small can of diced tomatoes with green chiles
- 1/2 Green Pepper Chopped
- 1 cup of Shredded Mexican Cheese
- Pinch of Cilantro
- Pinch of Cumin
- Salt and Pepper to Taste
Drain Chili and diced tomatoes. Mix Chili and cream cheese. Mix in all other ingredients, except the shredded cheese. Add shredded cheese to top. Bake at 375 for about 15-20 or until cheese is bubbly. Serve with tortilla chips. (note make sure you drain the chili and tomatoes off a bit, otherwise dip will be runny)
I promise, it doesn’t even taste like the same stuff.

I make a chili cheese dip recipe that’s to die for. Layer the bottom of baking dish with cream cheese – 2 8oz pkgs for a 9X13 pan; Layer Hormel hot chili/no beans – 2 cans for 9X13; add chopped onions and sliced black olives topped with montery jack cheese. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 350 until cheese melts. I keep it warm with a warming tray. Dip with sturdy taco chips. Soooo Gooood! Was trying to find it on the Hormel website but most are simplified.

I made this tonight and put it on oven french fries…. I now have a stomach ache from eating too much. I usually *hate* chili. This is soooo good… but I’m going to need some better self-control. LOL

We have no Rite Aid’s in Illinois……..but what is the brand of brown rice you speak of??
Harry Martin says
I will eat the chili straight from the can. I am starting to think there is a support group for people like me.

Lol.. you guys are so funny. I’ve had hormel chili since I was a little kid, so maybe that’s why I “think” I like it. =) We also use it around here for chili dogs with cheese and onions. This recipe looks awesome too and I’m sooo making it.. and I happen to have all the ingredients already.
I hope there’s more free chili! I didn’t have time to run over there for the free chili promo. =(

Thanks for Sharing! I have a bday party this weekend gonna try it out!!!

I’ll only eat wolf brand or homemade… even though wolf brand has oatmeal added so they don’t have to put as much meat in it.. and it’s still up to $2 a can sometimes around here! I can’t do Hormel.. but this dip does look good!

These comments crack me up! Maybe it’s a southern thing, but Hormel chili is all we eat on our hot dogs. Although I don’t use the kind w/ beans, ugh! Like some other commenters said, it’s really good w/ velveeta and tortilla chips!
ddawb says
no Rite Aid where I live.. therefore no free chili where I live either lol.
Shannon says
@ddawb,

You can make a really simply dip. When ever I make this, people at work, family and friends ask for the recipe. Take (1) 8oz pack of cream cheese(room temp) and spread it in a pie dish, pour one can of hormel chili on top, spread and add some shredded cheddar cheese. Microwave 2-3 minutes until cheese is melted and them serve with tortilla chips. Chili Cheese pie is what we know it by and it is really good.
Shannon says
@heidi,
I am not sure this would have masked the taste of the chili enough for me :P

I will take a layer of cream cheese in a glass baking dish, then put a can of chili next and then put cheddar cheese on top put it in the oven for about 15 minutes and then eat with tortillas… yummy

My sister in law made a recipe like this this summer (yummy!) and I totally forgot about. I was a little unsure what would happen to the 10 jars I have in my pantry. Problem solved! :-) Thanks!
ginna says
glad it was good and you are still alive :D

Yes I thought the same thing, I didnt even buy one can because I thought it looked disgusting and I would almost be embarrassed to buy it. However while looking for some appetizer recipes I saw a chili con queso dip that looked good and got great reviews and sure enough I need 2 cans of the Hormel chili. Now I wish I bought it.lol Anyways u just use a 2lb box of Velveeta and 2 cans of the Hormel chili without beans, melt the cheese and stir in the chili and cook on medium for 10 minutes.
Shannon says
@Pam,
oh Pam, fear not, I think we may see some more free Chili soon :)
Kelly says
Definitely have to eat in some dip or another. I use to make in with cream cheese and shredded cheese as well – definitely yummy!
Harry Martin says
LOL so many times in this post.
Shannon says
@Harry Martin,
Put on your eating pants and open up your chili harry.
Ann says
Hehe..I knew you could be converted! I actually fed my husband a bowl of Hormel chili over brown rice for dinner the other night. You know where I “bought” the rice.
Shannon says
@Ann,
you know what that brown rice from Rite Aid is pretty good!
