How to Make Your Home Smell Amazing
Who doesn’t want their home to smell amazing? My sister’s home always smells fantastic, my first thought, when I walk into my sister’s home is I’m moving in and never leaving here.
The first step to making your home smell amazing is finding the areas in your home with not-so-great fragrances.
This could be your refrigerator or the garbage disposal. For the refrigerator, you can leave an open container of baking soda and for the disposal, run the disposal after putting some citrus peels down the drain.
Burning candles is an easy quick fix to help get rid of odors, here are some easy ways to freshen your home on a regular basis.
Stovetop Potpourri – Combine ingredients such as chopped fruits, fresh herbs, cinnamon sticks, and spices in a pot. Add some water and turn the heat up until it simmers for a touch of seasonal nostalgia.
Reed Diffusers – Don’t require electricity and can be left to passively diffuse oil 24/7, making them perfect for entryways, bathrooms, and other areas with good air circulation. To make your own reed diffuser – Take a small glass container, fill it up with unscented baby oil and add a teaspoon of your favorite essential oil. Give it a quick stir to mix the oils together, and then pop some rattan sticks in.
Make your own air freshener – unfinished wood is an excellent carrier for fragrance oils because the wood is so absorbent. (Just make sure it’s actually unfinished, and not covered with a clear lacquer or paint.) You can pick up many unfinished wood products at your local craft store. Rub a little bit of oil into the wood, let it absorb, and then place the objects around your house. Here is how you can make your own DIY Hanging Air Freshener With Essential Oils.
When buying candles, go for natural scents, like woods, florals, and citrus instead of sugary scents. For essential oils, choose citrus and tea tree if you want a super-clean smell, or lavender for a calming scent.
Want your home to smell like your favorite cup of coffee – Take a glass or ceramic container, fill it with coffee beans, and pop a tealight in the center. When you light it, the scent of coffee will make your room smell delicious! Do remember to change the beans out every few weeks as they do lose their potency over time.
Deodorize your carpets and rugs by mixing baking soda and essential oil of your choice or baking soda and ground cinnamon in a shaker container and sprinkle them on. Leave overnight and vacuum up.
Do you have an unused stash of strong-smelling soaps – wrap them in a piece of fabric and pop them on a shelf.
Keep some scented candles in the linen closet or anywhere fabrics might live and be able to absorb the scent.
Clip a car deodorizer, to air conditioning and heating vents’ metal slats for a uniform scent throughout the house.
Light a clementine candle for a fresh orange scent – Here is how you can make your own clementine candle.
Here are a couple of pro tips that I found from Melissa Maker, the founder of the Clean My Space cleaning company, blog, and YouTube channel.
Make your own Fabric Refresher Spray – Mix half a cup of white vinegar, half a cup of rubbing alcohol, 1 teaspoon of cornstarch, and 20 drops of your favorite oil in a small spray bottle. Shake well before each use, and mist it over clothing or upholstery, ensuring that clothes dry completely before you fold them.
Baking Soda Sachets, which absorb bad smells and add in good ones: Fill a coffee filter with baking soda, add about five drops of essential oil, and tie it off—then toss it in a drawer or anywhere that needs a refresh.
Next time you replace your furnace filter, add 10 to 20 drops of essential oil
Making our home smell good will take a little extra effort, but it’s so worth it to have a home that smells good.
