The Unique Struggles of Being a Young Landlord

It became apparent that there are some unique challenges of being a young landlord. As a result, things were broken and damaged more often; the tenants seemed to think that because the landlords were young, they didn’t care about their belongings and their investment. Younger landlords attract younger, and less responsible tenants, which caused our friends a lot of grief. My fiance and I bought our house in late 2012, and moved in almost immediately.

Save Money on Rent

Years ago, we rented a unit in one of two quadruplex buildings owned by our landlord. To save some money, we asked the landlord if we could start a vegetable garden in the area outside our unit. The landlord also let me pick some of the seeded concord grapes growing up the hill. When the landlord saw how industrious we were – on the gardening and keeping things neat and clean - he offered us each a job, in return for a reduction in our rent.
