Generation Z has been criticized for being uninterested and uninvolved, but recent Brainly survey results of almost 1000 middle and highschoolers show that they may be the most compassionate and civic-minded generation yet.
Brainly, the leading education and homework help platform, conducted a nationwide survey to better understand students’ views on volunteering. The survey found that students volunteer for reasons beyond enhancing their college applications. Here are the surprising results:
> POST PANDEMIC VOLUNTEERING ON THE RISE
Post-pandemic, 29% of students believe volunteering is more important now than ever with 39% planning to volunteer in 2023.
> STUDENTS WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
When asked to select the reasons they choose to volunteer, over half (56%) of students cited altruistic reasons like ‘making a difference in their community’ as their top motivation.
> CAUSES MATTER TO STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
Students seek out personal interests when volunteering - Brainly found the top three student interests were for animals (48%), education (38%), and environmental causes (38%).
> OVER 10+ COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS IN 2022
62% of students who shared they volunteered in the past year, contributed over 10 hours varying in community service activities.
> MEET STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE
Students marked that they find the majority of their community service opportunities through ‘family and friends’ (53%) and ‘school’ (52%) so the best way to reach them is where they are. Good News: 1 in 3 also find them online too!
